Hebrews 11:19

Accounting that God was able to raise him vp, euen from the dead: from whence also he receiued him in a figure. Hebrews 11:19 (KJV)

“By faith Abraham, when he was tried, offered up Isaac; and he that had received the promises offered up his only begotten son.” Hebrews 11 is often referred to as the “Hall of Faith” or the “Faith Hall of Fame.” It is a chapter that highlights the faith of various individuals in the Old Testament and their remarkable acts of obedience to God. Hebrews 11:19 specifically focuses on Abraham and his unwavering faith in God. In this verse we see Abraham’s trust in God’s ability to fulfill His promises. The context of this verse is the account of Abraham’s willingness to offer his son, Isaac, as a sacrifice. God had previously promised Abraham that through Isaac his descendants would be as numerous as the stars in the sky. However, in a test of Abraham’s faith God commanded him to sacrifice his beloved son. Abraham’s faith is demonstrated in his conviction that God could even raise Isaac from the dead, or provide a way out of the impossible situation. Although Abraham had not witnessed a resurrection, he trusted that God’s power extended beyond human understanding. This deep trust in God’s faithfulness and sovereignty is evident in his readiness to obey. The latter part of the narrative shows that Isaac was spared from death. At the last moment God provided a ram as a substitute sacrifice, allowing Abraham to fulfill his act of obedience while preserving Isaac’s life. This event serves as a foreshadowing or symbol of God’s future provision of a sacrificial substitute in Jesus Christ, who would offer Himself as the ultimate sacrifice for humanity’s sins. Hebrews 11:19 teaches several important lessons about faith. First, it highlights the significance of believing in God’s power and trusting in His promises, even in seemingly impossible situations. Abraham’s unwavering faith is a powerful example for believers today. Second, this verse reminds us that God is always faithful to His Word. Abraham’s faith was not in vain because God fulfilled His promise and provided a substitute sacrifice. God’s faithfulness to His people is a recurring theme throughout the Bible and serves as a source of encouragement for believers. Lastly, Hebrews 11:19 points to the ultimate sacrifice of Jesus Christ. Just as God provided a substitute sacrifice for Isaac, He provided Jesus as the perfect sacrifice for the forgiveness of sins. This verse underscores the redemptive plan of God and foreshadows the central message of the New Testament.
