Hebrews 11:20

Listen to this article

“By faith Isaac blessed Jacob and Esau concerning things to come.”

Context:The Book of Hebrews is an epistle that emphasizes the supremacy of Jesus Christ and the superiority of the new covenant over the old covenant. Chapter 11, often referred to as the “faith chapter,” highlights the faith of various Old Testament figures and their exemplary acts of obedience.

Isaac’s Faith:Isaac, the son of Abraham and Sarah, plays a significant role in the history of Israel. In this verse, his act of faith is mentioned when he blessed his sons Jacob and Esau. Isaac’s blessing was not merely a traditional blessing but a prophetic declaration regarding their future.

Blessing Jacob and Esau:Isaac’s act of blessing is recorded in Genesis 27. At this time, Isaac was old and his eyes were dim, making him unable to see clearly. He intended to bless his firstborn son, Esau, but Rebekah, Jacob’s mother, conspired with Jacob to deceive Isaac and receive the blessing meant for Esau.

The Role of Faith:Although the circumstances surrounding the blessing were unconventional, Hebrews 11:20 emphasizes that Isaac’s act of blessing his sons was done by faith. Isaac believed that God’s promise to Abraham, his father, would be fulfilled through Jacob, despite his initial intention to bless Esau.

Prophetic Nature:The phrase “concerning things to come” highlights the prophetic aspect of Isaac’s blessing. By faith, Isaac spoke words of blessing and prophecy over his sons, indicating that he believed in God’s plan for their future and the fulfillment of God’s promises.

Lessons for Believers:This verse serves as a reminder of the importance of faith in the life of a believer. Isaac’s act of blessing demonstrates trust in God’s promises and the ability to discern God’s will beyond the immediate circumstances. It encourages us to have faith in God’s plan and to bless others with words of encouragement and prophecy.

Application:As believers, we can apply the example of Isaac’s faith by trusting in God’s promises, even when circumstances may seem uncertain. We can bless others through our words, speaking life and encouragement into their lives. Additionally, we can seek to discern God’s will and participate in His plan, aligning our actions and words with His purposes.

  • Remember that studying the Bible involves exploring the broader context of a passage and seeking to understand its meaning within the whole biblical narrative. May this study of Hebrews 11:20 deepen your understanding of faith and inspire you to trust in God’s promises.
