By faith the walls of Jericho fell down, after they were compassed about seven days.

Context

The Book of Hebrews was written to Jewish Christians to encourage them to remain faithful to Jesus Christ and not revert to Judaism. Hebrews 11 is often called the “faith chapter” because it lists Old Testament figures who demonstrated great faith. Hebrews 11:30 specifically points to the faith of the Israelites during the conquest of Jericho.

The event is recorded in Joshua 6:1-27. Jericho was a heavily fortified city in Canaan, the land God had promised to Israel. After forty years of wilderness wandering, the Israelites, under Joshua’s leadership, were about to enter that land. The city seemed impossible to conquer, yet God had already given it into their hands.

Meaning

The phrase “by faith” ties this verse to the central theme of Hebrews 11: faith is the assurance of things hoped for and the conviction of things not seen (Hebrews 11:1). The Israelites had not yet seen the walls fall, but they trusted God’s promise and acted on it.

God’s instructions were unusual: march around the city once a day for six days, and on the seventh day, march around it seven times, then shout. The people obeyed, even though the strategy seemed foolish by human standards. Their obedience was not blind ritual; it was faith in action, believing that God would do what He had promised.

The walls of Jericho fell because of God’s power, not because of Israel’s military strength or clever tactics. The miracle demonstrated that victory comes through trusting and obeying God’s word, not through human ability. The entire nation participated in the march, showing that faith is often collective, as God’s people obey together.

Biblical connections

The writer of Hebrews uses this historical event to inspire perseverance and confidence in God’s power. Just as God was faithful to His promise to Israel, He is faithful to His promises to believers today. The fall of Jericho also foreshadows the truth that God’s kingdom advances not by human might, but by faith in His word.

Application

Hebrews 11:30 encourages us to trust God’s power and follow His instructions, even when they seem unconventional or illogical. Faith is expressed through obedience. Just as the Israelites conquered Jericho by faith, we can face challenges and obstacles when we place our trust in God and follow His guidance, even when His methods do not make human sense.

This verse also reminds us to trust God’s timing. The Israelites marched for seven days before the walls fell. Faith often requires patient perseverance, continuing to obey even when we have not yet seen the result. God works through the obedient faith of His people, and He is faithful to His promises.

Reflection

The example of Jericho calls us to examine our own lives: are we willing to obey God when His plan seems strange or difficult? Are we ready to trust that He can bring down the walls we face?
