Hebrews 11:30
“By faith the walls of Jericho fell down, after they were compassed about seven days.”
Context:The Book of Hebrews is a letter written to Jewish Christians to encourage them to remain faithful to Jesus Christ and not revert to Judaism. Hebrews 11 is often referred to as the “faith chapter” or the “hall of faith” because it lists various Old Testament figures who demonstrated great faith. Hebrews 11:30 specifically refers to the faith of the Israelites during the conquest of Jericho.
Historical Background:The event referred to in this verse is recorded in the book of Joshua (Joshua 6:1-27). The city of Jericho was a heavily fortified city in Canaan, the land promised by God to the Israelites. The Israelites, under the leadership of Joshua, were about to enter the Promised Land after wandering in the wilderness for forty years.
Faith in Action:Hebrews 11:30 highlights the faith of the Israelites in God’s instructions regarding the conquest of Jericho. The walls of Jericho were strong and impenetrable, but God instructed the Israelites to march around the city once for six days and then on the seventh day, march around the city seven times. On the final round, they were to shout, and the walls of Jericho would collapse. Despite the unconventional nature of this plan, the Israelites obeyed in faith.
Faith and Obedience:The story of Jericho teaches us that faith is often linked to obedience. The Israelites’ obedience to God’s instructions demonstrated their trust in Him. It was their faith that motivated them to follow the seemingly strange and illogical strategy for conquering Jericho. Their faith required them to act in obedience to God’s word.
Trusting in God’s Power:The falling of the walls of Jericho was a miraculous event. It was not the strength or military tactics of the Israelites that brought down the walls, but the power of God. The event reminds us that when we place our faith in God, He can accomplish extraordinary things on our behalf.
Application:Hebrews 11:30 encourages us to trust in God’s power and follow His instructions, even when they may seem unconventional or illogical. It teaches us that our faith should be expressed through obedience. Just as the Israelites conquered Jericho by faith, we can overcome challenges and obstacles in our lives when we place our trust in God and follow His guidance.
- Overall Theme:The overarching theme of Hebrews 11 is that faith is essential in our relationship with God. It is through faith that we please God and receive His promises. The examples mentioned in Hebrews 11 serve as inspiration and encouragement for believers to live by faith and trust in God’s faithfulness.
