Hebrews 12:27

Posted on 18 May at 14:27
Listen to this article

“And this word, Yet once more, signifieth the removing of those things that are shaken, as of things that are made, that those things which cannot be shaken may remain.”

Context:The book of Hebrews was written to Jewish Christians, emphasising the superiority of Christ and the new covenant over the old covenant and the Mosaic law. In Hebrews 12, the author encourages believers to persevere in their faith and endure the discipline of the Lord.

Symbolism:The verse begins with the phrase “And this word, Yet once more.” Here, the author is referring to a prophetic word found in the book of Haggai:

“For thus saith the Lord of hosts; Yet once, it is a little while, and I will shake the heavens, and the earth, and the sea, and the dry land” (Haggai 2:6, KJV).

The shaking mentioned in both Haggai and Hebrews refers to a great upheaval, both literal and metaphorical, that will occur in the future.

The Removing of Shaken Things:The verse explains that the shaking signifies the removal of those things that are shaken, which refers to the temporary and imperfect things of this world. It points to the transient nature of earthly possessions, institutions, and systems that can be shaken or destroyed.

The Unshakeable Things:The purpose of the shaking is to make evident and distinguish those things that cannot be shaken, which are eternal and unchangeable. These unshakeable things include the kingdom of God, His promises, and the unchanging nature of Christ. They remain steadfast and secure even in the face of turmoil and upheaval.

Application:Hebrews 12:27 teaches us several important lessons:

  • Prioritise the eternal:We are reminded to focus our lives on the things that truly matter, the things that are eternal and will remain unaffected by the transient nature of this world. This includes our relationship with God, His Word, and His kingdom.
  • Trust in God’s sovereignty:The verse highlights God’s control over all things, even in times of shaking and uncertainty. We can find comfort in knowing that He is in charge and that He will establish and preserve what is ultimately important.
  • Endure challenges and persevere:The passage encourages believers to endure through trials, knowing that the temporary struggles and difficulties are part of God’s refining process. We should remain steadfast in our faith and rely on God’s strength to see us through.
  • Seek true security:Earthly possessions and systems can provide a false sense of security. True security can only be found in the unchanging nature of God and His eternal promises. We should anchor our lives in Him and build our foundation on His truth.

In conclusion, Hebrews 12:27 reminds us of the transient nature of earthly things and encourages us to focus on the eternal and unshakeable aspects of our faith. It calls us to trust in God’s sovereignty, endure challenges, and find our security in Him.
