Hebrews 12:28

Listen to this article

“Wherefore we receiving a kingdom which cannot be moved, let us have grace, whereby we may serve God acceptably with reverence and godly fear:”

This verse comes from the book of Hebrews, which is a letter written by an unknown author to a group of Jewish Christians. The author of Hebrews emphasizes the supremacy of Christ and encourages the readers to persevere in their faith.

Now, let’s break down the verse and explore its key themes and teachings:

Receiving a Kingdom:The verse begins by acknowledging that believers have received a kingdom. This refers to the kingdom of God, which Jesus inaugurated through His life, death, and resurrection. This kingdom is spiritual and eternal, surpassing all earthly kingdoms. It is a realm of God’s rule and reign, characterized by righteousness, peace, and joy in the Holy Spirit (Romans 14:17).

Unmovable Kingdom:The kingdom we receive is described as one that cannot be moved or shaken. This implies its stability, permanence, and unchangeable nature. While earthly kingdoms rise and fall, the kingdom of God stands firm. As believers, our hope and security are rooted in this unmovable kingdom, which provides a solid foundation for our faith and life.

Let Us Have Grace:The verse encourages believers to have grace. Grace refers to God’s unmerited favor and loving‑kindness toward us. It is through God’s grace that we are saved and able to enter His kingdom. Here, the author exhorts us to continually receive and rely on God’s grace, recognizing our dependence on Him. Grace empowers us to live as God’s children and equips us to serve Him faithfully.

Serving God Acceptably:The verse emphasizes that we should serve God acceptably. Our service to God should not be driven by legalistic rules or rituals but motivated by love and gratitude. It should reflect a sincere and genuine desire to honor and obey Him. Acceptable service is characterized by obedience to God’s Word, humility, devotion, and a willingness to surrender our lives to His purposes.

Reverence and Godly Fear:The verse concludes by highlighting two attitudes that should accompany our service to God: reverence and godly fear. Reverence implies deep respect, awe, and honor for God. It involves recognizing His holiness, majesty, and authority. Godly fear, on the other hand, is not a terror or dread but a reverential awe that acknowledges God’s power, justice, and accountability. It is a healthy and appropriate attitude that recognizes our dependence on Him and motivates us to live in accordance with His will.

In summary, Hebrews 12:28 reminds us of the privilege of being part of God’s unmovable kingdom. It encourages us to embrace God’s grace, serve Him acceptably, and approach Him with reverence and godly fear. By living in light of these truths, we can honour God and experience the fullness of His kingdom in our lives.
