Hebrews 13:17
“Obey them that have the rule over you, and submit yourselves: for they watch for your souls, as they that must give account, that they may do it with joy, and not with grief: for that is unprofitable for you.”
Context:The book of Hebrews was written to encourage Jewish Christians who were facing persecution and temptation to remain faithful to Christ. In the previous verses, the author exhorts the believers to love one another, show hospitality, remember those in prison, and honour marriage. Hebrews 13:17 continues the exhortation by emphasising the importance of obeying and submitting to those in leadership.
Obey and submit:The verse begins with a call to obey and submit to those who have authority or rule over the believers. This refers to the leaders and shepherds within the Christian community, such as pastors, elders, and spiritual overseers. The obedience and submission are rooted in the recognition of their spiritual authority and responsibility.
Reason for obedience:The verse provides two reasons for obeying and submitting to the leaders. First, the leaders “watch for your souls.” They have a spiritual oversight and responsibility to care for the well‑being and spiritual growth of the believers. They are accountable to God for their stewardship of this responsibility.
Giving account with joy:The verse continues by stating that the leaders must give an account for their stewardship of watching over the souls of the believers. This implies that they will be held accountable by God for how they carried out their responsibilities. Consequently, it is in the best interest of the believers to make the leaders’ task a joyous one by cooperating and submitting to their leadership.
Avoiding grief:The verse concludes by warning that if the believers make the leaders’ task difficult or burdensome, it is unprofitable for them. Grieving the leaders hinders their ability to effectively fulfil their responsibilities, which could be detrimental to the spiritual growth and well‑being of the believers.
