Hebrews 2:4

Listen to this article

“God also bearing them witness, both with signs and wonders, and with divers miracles, and gifts of the Holy Ghost, according to his own will.”

Context:The book of Hebrews is a letter written to Jewish Christians, emphasizing the supremacy of Jesus Christ and the superiority of the new covenant over the old covenant. The author of Hebrews seeks to encourage and exhort believers to remain faithful to Christ in the face of various challenges and temptations.

“God also bearing them witness”:The verse begins by highlighting that God Himself bore witness to the message of salvation proclaimed by the early apostles. The phrase “them” refers to the apostles or those who preached the Gospel. God provided evidence and confirmation of their message.

“Both with signs and wonders, and with divers miracles”:God confirmed the apostles’ preaching with supernatural manifestations such as signs, wonders, and miracles. These extraordinary works demonstrated the power and authority of God and served as a testimony to the truth of the Gospel. Throughout the New Testament, we see numerous examples of Jesus and the apostles performing miracles to authenticate their message.

“Gifts of the Holy Ghost”:Along with signs, wonders, and miracles, God also bestowed spiritual gifts upon the early believers through the Holy Spirit. These gifts, listed in various New Testament passages (e.g., 1 Corinthians 12, Romans 12, Ephesians 4), were given for the edification of the Church and the equipping of believers for ministry.

“According to his own will”:The distribution of signs, wonders, miracles, and spiritual gifts was determined solely by God’s will. He sovereignly chose how and when to bestow these gifts and manifestations. This phrase emphasizes that these supernatural manifestations were not arbitrary or driven by human desires but were under the direct control and guidance of God.

In Hebrews 2:4, the author highlights the divine confirmation of the apostles’ message through signs, wonders, miracles, and spiritual gifts. These extraordinary demonstrations of God’s power validated the authenticity of the Gospel and provided assurance to the early believers. The verse also emphasizes that God, in His sovereignty, determined the distribution of these manifestations according to His own will.

It is important to remember that while signs, wonders, and miracles played a significant role in the early establishment of the Church, their primary purpose was to affirm the truth of the Gospel and bring people to faith in Christ. The foundational message of salvation through Jesus Christ remains central for all believers, regardless of the presence or absence of supernatural manifestations in their lives today.
