“And this will we do, if God permit.”

Hebrews 6:3 is a short verse that appears in the New Testament book of Hebrews: To fully understand its meaning, it is important to consider the context of the surrounding verses and the overall theme of the book.

The book of Hebrews was written to a group of Jewish Christians who were facing various challenges and temptations to abandon their faith in Christ and return to the Old Testament practices of Judaism. The author of Hebrews seeks to encourage and exhort them to remain steadfast in their commitment to Christ and to mature in their understanding of the Christian faith.

In the preceding verses, the author of Hebrews discusses the importance of moving beyond the elementary teachings of the Christian faith and progressing towards maturity. He encourages the readers to leave behind the foundational principles and move on to deeper spiritual understanding and growth. These foundational principles include repentance from dead works, faith toward God, baptism, laying on of hands, resurrection of the dead, and eternal judgment (Hebrews 6:1-2).

In Hebrews 6:3, the author expresses his intention to move forward in teaching and exploring more advanced spiritual truths, stating, “And this will we do, if God permit.” The phrase “if God permit” indicates a recognition of the sovereignty and guidance of God. The author acknowledges that the ability to progress in spiritual understanding and to delve into deeper truths is ultimately dependent on God’s permission and guidance. It highlights the need for humility, reliance on God’s wisdom, and the recognition that our spiritual growth is ultimately in God’s hands.

This verse reminds believers that spiritual maturity is a process that requires continued learning, seeking, and relying on God’s guidance. It emphasizes the importance of being open to God’s leading and allowing Him to shape and deepen our understanding of His truth.
