Hebrews 6:2

Of the doctrine of baptisms, and of laying on of hands, and of resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment.

Hebrews 6:2 (KJV)

Hebrews 6:2 belongs to a passage in which the author urges believers to leave the elementary teachings about Christ and go on to maturity. The verse lists four foundational doctrines: baptisms, laying on of hands, resurrection of the dead, and eternal judgment. These are presented as basic principles of the Christian faith, not as the final goal of spiritual growth.

The phrase “doctrine of baptisms” uses the plural because it likely includes the various ceremonial washings known in Jewish practice as well as the Christian ordinance of water baptism. In the early church, baptism was a sign of repentance, cleansing from sin, and identification with Christ’s death and resurrection. It marked a person’s initiation into the faith.

The laying on of hands was a symbolic act in which hands were placed on a person to impart a blessing, confer authority, invoke the Holy Spirit, or commission someone for ministry. The New Testament connects this practice with healing, the receiving of the Holy Spirit, and the appointment of leaders.

The resurrection of the dead is the teaching that all people will be raised at the end of time. Christ’s own resurrection is the guarantee and pattern for the believer’s resurrection, giving hope and assurance of eternal life.

Eternal judgment is the truth that every person will stand before God and receive the outcome of their response to His grace. Those who trust in Christ receive eternal life with God; those who reject Him face eternal separation from Him. This doctrine underscores the seriousness of choosing to follow God’s will.

Hebrews 6:1-3 shows that the author intends to move beyond these foundational teachings to deeper instruction, with God’s permission. The verse is part of a warning against spiritual stagnation and a call to press on to maturity. These doctrines are not to be endlessly repeated but to be built upon as believers grow.

These four teachings remain essential for every believer. They provide a solid foundation for understanding the Christian faith and for growing in spiritual maturity. Rather than staying at the elementary level, believers are encouraged to build on these truths and press forward in their walk with God.

Hebrews 6:2 reminds us that foundational doctrines are not optional, but they are also not the final destination. They are the starting point for a life of deeper faith and obedience. As we understand these basics, we are called to move on to maturity, trusting God to lead us into greater truth and holiness.
