Hebrews 7:1

Posted on 18 May at 14:28
Listen to this article

“For this Melchisedec, king of Salem, priest of the most high God, who met Abraham returning from the slaughter of the kings, and blessed him.”

Hebrews 7:1 introduces the character of Melchizedek, who is mentioned in the Old Testament in Genesis 14:17-20. In this verse, the author of Hebrews references an encounter between Melchizedek and Abraham after Abraham’s victorious battle against the kings.

**Melchizedek**:Melchizedek is an intriguing figure in the Bible. He is identified as the king of Salem, which is believed to be an ancient name for Jerusalem. Additionally, he is described as a priest of the Most High God. The significance of Melchizedek lies in his unique role as both king and priest, which sets him apart from the Levitical priesthood established later in the Old Testament.

**King of Salem**:Salem is understood to be the ancient name for Jerusalem, the future capital of Israel. Melchizedek’s kingship highlights his authority and prominence in the region. His rule in Salem suggests that he held a position of power and influence in that time.

**Priest of the Most High God**:Melchizedek is not only a king but also a priest of the Most High God. The phrase Most High God emphasizes the sovereignty and supreme authority of God. Melchizedek’s priestly role reflects his function as a mediator between God and humanity, offering sacrifices and interceding on behalf of the people.

**Meeting with Abraham**:The verse mentions that Melchizedek met Abraham after his victory over the kings. In Genesis 14:18-20, it is recorded that Melchizedek brought out bread and wine and blessed Abraham. Abraham, in return, gave Melchizedek a tenth of everything he had obtained in battle. This encounter indicates a recognition of Melchizedek’s superiority and authority over Abraham.

The subsequent verses in Hebrews 7 expand on the significance of Melchizedek’s priesthood, drawing a comparison between Melchizedek and Jesus Christ. The author of Hebrews argues that Melchizedek’s priesthood is greater than the Levitical priesthood because Abraham, the father of the Israelite nation and the ancestor of the Levites, acknowledged the authority of Melchizedek.

By connecting Melchizedek’s priesthood to Jesus Christ, the author establishes Jesus’ superiority over the Levitical priesthood and emphasizes his eternal and unchangeable nature as the high priest for all believers.

In summary, Hebrews 7:1 introduces Melchizedek, a figure who holds the dual roles of king and priest. This verse highlights the encounter between Melchizedek and Abraham, emphasizing Melchizedek’s authority and his role as a representative of the Most High God. This encounter lays the foundation for the author’s later comparison between Melchizedek and Jesus Christ as the ultimate high priest.
