Hebrews 7:2

Posted on 18 May at 14:28
Listen to this article

“To whom also Abraham gave a tenth part of all; first being by interpretation King of righteousness, and after that also King of Salem, which is, King of peace;”

This verse is a part of the broader context of Hebrews 7, where the author explores the superiority of Jesus Christ’s priesthood compared to the Levitical priesthood established in the Old Testament. The author presents Melchizedek, an enigmatic figure from the book of Genesis, as a type or foreshadowing of Christ’s priesthood.

Melchizedek’s Identity:The verse refers to Melchizedek as the one to whom Abraham gave a tenth part of all. The reference to this event can be found in Genesis 14:18-20, where Melchizedek, the king of Salem, blesses Abraham after his victory in battle. In Hebrews, Melchizedek is presented as a figure who prefigures Christ in his kingly and priestly roles.

King of Righteousness and King of Peace:The verse describes Melchizedek as “King of righteousness” and “King of Salem, which is, King of peace.” These titles carry significant spiritual implications. The term “King of righteousness” highlights Melchizedek’s righteous character and moral authority. Additionally, “King of peace” emphasizes the peace that results from righteousness and points to the peace that Jesus, the ultimate High Priest, brings to believers.

Foreshadowing Christ’s Priesthood:The mention of Melchizedek in this passage serves as an analogy or foreshadowing of Jesus’ priesthood. Melchizedek is unique in that he is both a king and a priest, combining two roles that were typically separate in the Old Testament. This combination aligns with Jesus, who is not only the King of kings but also the High Priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek (Hebrews 6:20).

The Superiority of Melchizedek:Hebrews 7 goes on to explain the superiority of Melchizedek’s priesthood over the Levitical priesthood. The author argues that Melchizedek’s priesthood was greater because Abraham, the patriarch of Israel, gave him a tenth of the spoils. In Jewish custom, a lesser person would give tithes to a greater person. Thus, the act of Abraham giving tithes to Melchizedek demonstrated Melchizedek’s superiority and highlighted the temporary nature of the Levitical priesthood.

Overall, Hebrews 7:2 points to the unique and superior nature of Jesus Christ’s priesthood in comparison to the Levitical priesthood, using Melchizedek as a symbolic figure. It highlights the righteousness and peace associated with Melchizedek’s kingship and connects these attributes to Jesus, the eternal High Priest who brings righteousness and peace to those who believe in Him.
