Hebrews 7:22

Listen to this article

“By so much was Jesus made a surety of a better testament.”

Context:The book of Hebrews is a letter written to Jewish Christians who were facing persecution and tempted to turn away from their faith in Jesus Christ. The author of Hebrews presents Jesus as the ultimate high priest and emphasizes His superiority over the Old Testament priesthood and the covenant of the law.

Jesus as a Surety:The term “surety” refers to someone who takes responsibility for another person’s debts or obligations. In this verse, it indicates that Jesus became a guarantee or a pledge for a better covenant or testament.

The Better Testament:The verse implies that Jesus is the mediator of a better covenant or testament. The previous verses in Hebrews 7 explain that Jesus is a priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek (Hebrews 7:17). Unlike the Levitical priesthood, which was based on the law of Moses, Jesus’ priesthood is based on a superior order. The new covenant established by Jesus provides a better way for humanity to approach God and experience forgiveness and salvation.

Comparison with the Old Testament:The writer of Hebrews contrasts the Old Testament priesthood with the priesthood of Jesus. The Levitical priesthood was temporary and imperfect, as the priests themselves were sinful and mortal. In contrast, Jesus, as the eternal Son of God, is a perfect high priest who offered Himself as a sacrifice once for all (Hebrews 7:27). His priesthood is superior, providing a better way of salvation and access to God.

Application:This verse reminds us of the incredible gift of salvation that we have through Jesus Christ. He not only offered Himself as a sacrifice for our sins but also serves as our surety, guaranteeing the fulfillment of God’s promises. As believers, we can trust in the finished work of Jesus on the cross and have confidence in the better covenant He has established. We are invited to approach God with boldness and assurance, knowing that Jesus intercedes for us as our faithful high priest.
