Hebrews 7:28
“Let us, therefore, come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.”
Context:The book of Hebrews was written to Jewish Christians who were facing persecution and contemplating a return to Judaism. The author of Hebrews presents Jesus Christ as the ultimate fulfilment of the Old Testament laws and sacrifices. In chapter 4, the author encourages the readers to enter into God’s rest and warns against unbelief.
Approaching the Throne of Grace:The verse begins with an exhortation, “Let us, therefore.” This phrase connects to the previous verses where the author speaks about the high priestly ministry of Jesus Christ, who sympathises with our weaknesses. Because of Jesus’ work, the author urges believers to approach the throne of grace boldly.
The Throne of Grace:The throne of grace refers to the presence of God in heaven. It signifies His sovereignty, authority, and mercy. In contrast to the throne of judgment, the throne of grace is where we can find help, forgiveness, and favour from God.
Coming Boldly:The phrase “come boldly” emphasises the confidence and assurance we can have as we approach God’s throne. It highlights the privilege believers have through faith in Jesus Christ. We can come to God’s presence without fear, timidity, or doubt, knowing that we are accepted and loved by Him.
Obtaining Mercy and Finding Grace:When we come boldly to the throne of grace, two things are promised to us. Firstly, we obtain mercy. Mercy is the compassionate withholding of the punishment we deserve for our sins. God, in His love and mercy, forgives and pardons us when we repent and seek His forgiveness. Secondly, we find grace. Grace is God’s unmerited favour and empowering presence that enables us to live a godly life and face the challenges of life victoriously.
Help in Time of Need:The verse concludes by stating that we find grace to help in time of need. As we come to God’s throne of grace, we can find the help, strength, and guidance we need in every situation we face. God’s grace is available to us, not just in moments of crisis but in every aspect of our lives.
