Hebrews 8:1

Posted on 18 May at 14:28
Listen to this article

“Now of the things which we have spoken this is the sum: We have such an high priest, who is set on the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens.”

Context:The book of Hebrews was written to encourage and strengthen Jewish believers in their faith in Jesus Christ. It presents Jesus as the ultimate high priest who fulfills and surpasses the roles and functions of the Old Testament priesthood. Hebrews 8:1 serves as an introduction to the main point the author is making about Jesus’ priesthood.

The Sum of the Things Spoken:The verse begins by stating, “Now of the things which we have spoken this is the sum.” This indicates that the author is summarizing or providing a key point based on what has been discussed previously in the book. The “things” referred to here include the comparisons made between Jesus and the Old Testament priests in the previous chapters.

The High Priest:The verse continues by introducing Jesus as the high priest. In the Old Testament, the high priest was the chief religious leader who interceded for the people, offered sacrifices, and entered the Most Holy Place once a year on the Day of Atonement. The author of Hebrews presents Jesus as the ultimate high priest who fulfills and surpasses the role of the earthly high priests.

Seated at the Right Hand:The verse further emphasizes that Jesus, as the high priest, is “set on the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens.” The right hand is a position of honor, authority, and power. This imagery emphasizes Jesus’ exalted status and His intimate relationship with God the Father, who is referred to as the “Majesty in the heavens.”

The Heavenly Throne:The mention of the “throne of the Majesty in the heavens” highlights the heavenly realm where Jesus now reigns. It signifies His position of authority and His role in mediating between God and humanity.

In summary, Hebrews 8:1 presents Jesus as the high priest who holds a unique and exalted position at the right hand of God in heaven. It establishes the superiority of Jesus’ priesthood over the Old Testament priesthood and sets the stage for further exploration of this theme throughout the book of Hebrews.
