Hebrews 8:2
“A minister of the sanctuary, and of the true tabernacle, which the Lord pitched, and not man.”
Context:The book of Hebrews was written to a group of Jewish Christians who were facing persecution and considering going back to their old religious practices. The author of Hebrews presents Jesus Christ as the superior fulfilment of the Old Testament laws and rituals. In chapter 8, the author focuses on the superiority of Christ’s priesthood.
Minister of the sanctuary:This verse describes Jesus as a minister of the sanctuary. In the Old Testament, the sanctuary was the place where God dwelled among His people, and the high priest was responsible for ministering in the sanctuary. However, Jesus is portrayed as the ultimate and perfect High Priest who ministers in a heavenly sanctuary, not made by human hands.
The true tabernacle:The author of Hebrews contrasts the earthly tabernacle, built by human hands, with the true tabernacle that the Lord pitched. The earthly tabernacle was a physical representation and foreshadowing of the heavenly reality. Jesus, as the minister of the true tabernacle, represents the ultimate fulfilment of all the types and shadows of the Old Testament.
Jesus as the perfect High Priest:Throughout the book of Hebrews, Jesus is portrayed as the perfect High Priest who offers a superior sacrifice and intercedes for His people. Unlike the earthly high priests who had to offer sacrifices repeatedly, Jesus offered Himself once for all, providing eternal redemption for humanity. By His sacrifice, Jesus opened a new and living way for believers to approach God.
The superiority of the New Covenant:The preceding verses in Hebrews 8 highlight the superiority of the New Covenant established through Jesus. The author quotes from Jeremiah 31:31-34, where the prophet speaks of a new covenant that God will make with His people. This new covenant is based on better promises, enacted through the sacrifice and mediation of Jesus Christ.
