Isaiah 21:12

The watchman said, The morning cometh, and also the night: if ye will enquire, enquire ye: return, come.

Isaiah 21:12 (KJV)

Isaiah 21:12 belongs to a larger oracle in which the prophet Isaiah delivers a message of judgment and warning to the nations, specifically concerning the fall of Babylon. In this verse, Isaiah speaks as a watchman, a figure responsible for keeping watch over the city, especially at night, to ensure its safety and to look for signs of danger or approaching armies.

The watchman’s reply, “The morning cometh, and also the night,” indicates a constant succession of morning and night—a morning of prosperity and a night of adversity. The morning may also symbolize the coming of the Gospel dispensation or the coming of Christ, which brings joy and cheerfulness, dispersing darkness. The invitation, “if ye will enquire, enquire ye: return, come,” is an open call to those who seek understanding to come back and ask again, suggesting that the watchman is willing to engage with sincere inquirers. This call is not a one-time offer but an ongoing invitation, reflecting God’s patience and desire for people to seek Him persistently.

The verse emphasizes the role of the watchman as a spiritual guardian who proclaims a message of both hope and warning. The call to “return” and “come” can be seen as an invitation to repentance and to seek God. The verse does not promise a permanent morning but acknowledges the ongoing cycle of light and darkness, urging the listener to persist in seeking and to respond to the watchman’s call. The watchman’s message is one of vigilance and readiness, encouraging the people to be alert and to turn back to God. The verse is a reminder that while judgment is certain, there is also an invitation to return and seek the Lord. Believers today are called to be watchful in their own lives, ready to hear God’s voice and to respond with repentance and faith, knowing that His mercy is available to all who sincerely seek Him.
