Isaiah 21:17

“And the residue of the number of archers, the mighty men of the children of Kedar, shall be diminished: for the LORD God of Israel hath spoken it.”

Context:The book of Isaiah is a prophetic book in the Old Testament, and this particular verse is found within a larger passage (Isaiah 21:11-17) where the prophet Isaiah pronounces judgments upon various nations, including Babylon, Dumah, and Kedar.

Identification of the group mentioned:In this verse, the “children of Kedar” are mentioned. Kedar was the second son of Ishmael, the son of Abraham, and is associated with the Arabian desert region. The children of Kedar were known as a nomadic people, skilled in archery and horseback riding.

The diminishing of the mighty men:The verse states that the residue or remaining number of archers, who were the mighty men of the children of Kedar, would be diminished. This implies that they would face a reduction in their numbers or strength. It signifies a judgment or downfall that would come upon this particular group of people.

The pronouncement of the LORD:The reason for this diminishing of the mighty men is attributed to the spoken word of the LORD God of Israel. This highlights the sovereignty of God and His authority over nations and individuals. When God speaks, His word is powerful and is sure to come to pass.

God’s faithfulness in fulfilling His word:This verse, like many others in the book of Isaiah, demonstrates God’s faithfulness in fulfilling His prophetic word. The prophecy declared by Isaiah concerning the children of Kedar was eventually fulfilled, just as the prophecies concerning other nations were fulfilled as well.

Remember, it is always helpful to read a verse in its broader context and consider the historical and cultural background to gain a more comprehensive understanding of its meaning. Additionally, consulting commentaries and seeking guidance from trusted spiritual leaders can provide further insights into the interpretation and application of specific Bible verses.
