Isaiah 35:5
Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened, and the ears of the deaf shall be unstopped.
Isaiah 35:5 (KJV)
Context
Isaiah 35 is a chapter of promised restoration and joy for God’s redeemed people. It describes the transformation of the wilderness into a place of beauty and abundance, and it speaks of the redemption and deliverance that God will bring. The word “Then” at the start of this verse connects the healing directly to the preceding promise that God will come with vengeance and salvation (Isaiah 35:4). The opening of blind eyes and unstopping of deaf ears are therefore part of the deliverance God brings to His people.
Meaning
Isaiah 35:5 contains a powerful message of divine healing and restoration. On a literal level, it speaks of a time when physical blindness and deafness will be overcome, conveying the hope that God’s power will bring physical healing. Yet the verse also carries a deeper spiritual significance, representing God’s ability to give spiritual sight to those who are spiritually blind and to open the ears of those who are spiritually deaf. This dual meaning—physical and spiritual—is essential for understanding the verse.
Biblical connections
The verse was literally fulfilled in the first coming of Christ, as recorded in the Gospels. Jesus opened the eyes of the blind (Matthew 9:27-30; John 9:1-7) and unstopped deaf ears (Mark 7:32-35). These miracles were signs of the Messiah’s arrival and the inbreaking of God’s kingdom. They demonstrate His divine authority and compassion, and they point to the complete restoration that will be fully realized in the age to come.
Application
In a spiritual sense, we are all born blind and deaf due to the effects of sin. We are unable to see and understand the things of God, and our ears are closed to His voice. However, through the work of Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit, God can open our eyes and ears, bringing transformation. Just as God can heal physical blindness and deafness, He can heal our spiritual blindness and deafness. Through faith in Jesus Christ, we can receive spiritual sight and understanding, enabling us to recognize the truth of the Gospel and understand God’s will.
This verse also serves as an invitation to seek God for healing and restoration. It encourages us to approach Him in faith, asking Him to open our eyes to His truth and to unstop our ears so that we can hear His voice clearly. God delights in revealing Himself to those who seek Him with a sincere heart. For believers, this verse encourages prayer for spiritual sight and hearing, and it assures us that God is able to bring light and understanding where there was darkness and confusion.
Reflection
Isaiah 35:5 reminds us of God’s power to bring physical and spiritual healing and restoration. It encourages us to approach God with faith, seeking Him to open our eyes and ears so that we may see and understand His truth. Through Jesus Christ, we can experience the transformative work of God in our lives and receive the gift of spiritual sight and understanding. It also anticipates the ultimate healing and wholeness that God’s people will experience in His presence.
