Isaiah 7:11
“Ask thee a sign of the Lord thy God; ask it either in the depth, or in the height above.”
Context:Isaiah 7 is set during the reign of King Ahaz of Judah. At this time, the kingdom of Judah was under threat from the combined forces of Israel and Syria. In the face of this crisis, the Lord sent the prophet Isaiah to King Ahaz with a message of assurance and a call to trust in God’s protection.
Study:Trust in God’s Promises: In Isaiah 7:11, the Lord instructs King Ahaz to ask for a sign as confirmation of God’s faithfulness and deliverance. Ahaz had been hesitant to trust in the Lord’s promises, but God offers him a sign as evidence of His presence and intervention. This reminds us of the importance of trusting in God’s promises, even in challenging circumstances.
The Nature of the Sign:God tells Ahaz to choose any sign he desires, either in the depths or in the heights. The “depth” refers to the realm of the dead or the depths of the earth, while the “height above” refers to the heavens. God’s offer is essentially boundless, giving Ahaz the opportunity to ask for any sign that would strengthen his faith.
Ahaz’s Response:However, King Ahaz responds to God’s offer with hesitation and an appearance of false piety. In verse 12, Ahaz says he will not test the Lord, effectively rejecting the opportunity to seek a sign. This response reveals Ahaz’s lack of trust and unwillingness to rely on God’s guidance.
Messianic Prophecy:Although Ahaz rejected the opportunity to request a sign, God, through the prophet Isaiah, gives a sign of His own choosing in verse 14: “Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.” This verse is a significant Messianic prophecy, ultimately pointing to the birth of Jesus Christ, who would be born of a virgin.
Application:Trust in God’s Promises: Just as Ahaz was called to trust in God’s promises, we are also encouraged to have faith and trust in God’s faithfulness. God’s promises are sure, and He invites us to rely on Him in every situation.
Seeking Signs with Wisdom:While Ahaz’s response demonstrated a lack of faith, it’s important to approach seeking signs with wisdom. We should not test God or demand signs to validate our faith. Instead, we should seek God’s guidance, trust in His Word, and be attentive to the signs and guidance He provides.
The Sign of Immanuel:The sign given to Ahaz of a virgin conceiving and bearing a son points forward to the birth of Jesus, who is Immanuel, meaning “God with us.” This reminds us of God’s plan of salvation through Jesus Christ and the significance of His presence in our lives.
Embracing God’s Promises Fulfilled:As believers, we have the privilege of living in the fulfillment of God’s promises through Jesus Christ. We can rejoice in the reality of Immanuel, knowing that God is with us always, providing guidance, comfort, and salvation.
