Jeremiah 10:17

Gather up thy wares out of the land, O inhabitant of the fortress.

Jeremiah 10:17 (KJV)

The book of Jeremiah is a prophetic book in the Old Testament. Jeremiah was a prophet called by God to deliver messages of judgment and warning to the people of Judah. This verse is part of a larger section where Jeremiah prophesies against the idolatry and false gods of the nations, contrasting the impotence of idols with the power of the true God.

The book of Jeremiah was written during a time when the kingdom of Judah was facing imminent destruction at the hands of the Babylonian Empire. The people had turned away from God and were engaged in idolatry and wickedness. Jeremiah’s prophecies were a call to repentance and a warning of the coming judgment.

In Jeremiah 10:17, the term “wares” refers to the possessions or goods that one would pack when fleeing or being deported. The verse is a call for the inhabitants of the fortress, likely referring to the people of Judah who had sought refuge in fortified cities, to gather up their belongings and prepare to face the consequences of their actions. The command is urgent and ironic: they are told to collect their possessions because they will soon be forced to leave.

The “fortress” likely refers to Jerusalem, which, despite its strong walls and seeming security, will not withstand God’s judgment. The people trusted in their own strength and alliances with other nations instead of relying on God. In this verse, God is warning them that their false gods will not save them from the impending destruction.

Throughout the book of Jeremiah, God’s judgment is a recurring theme. The people of Judah had forsaken the true God and turned to idols made of wood and stone. This verse underscores the certainty of divine judgment and the futility of trusting in human fortifications. It also highlights the theme of exile as a consequence of covenant unfaithfulness.

While the verse speaks of impending judgment, the larger context of the book of Jeremiah also emphasizes the opportunity for repentance and restoration. In subsequent chapters, Jeremiah offers hope and restoration to those who turn back to God. Despite the impending judgment, God’s desire is for His people to repent and return to Him. In the broader biblical narrative, exile becomes a means of purification and restoration.

Jeremiah 10:17 serves as a reminder to believers today to examine their own lives and ensure that their trust is solely in God. It challenges us to identify any false idols or things we may be relying on instead of God. The call to “gather up thy wares” can be seen as a metaphor for spiritual preparedness—holding loosely to worldly goods and prioritizing obedience to God. Earthly security is temporary, and one must be ready to let go of material possessions.

It encourages us to repent of any idolatry or misplaced trust and turn back to God, seeking His forgiveness and restoration. The verse also points to the need for repentance and humility before God, who alone is sovereign over nations. For the Christian reader, the spiritual principle remains: do not place ultimate trust in earthly security, but in God alone.
