Jeremiah 14:14

Posted on 18 May at 15:02
Listen to this article

“Then the LORD said unto me, The prophets prophesy lies in my name: I sent them not, neither have I commanded them, neither spake unto them: they prophesy unto you a false vision and divination, and a thing of nought, and the deceit of their heart.”

Context:Jeremiah was a prophet called by God to deliver His messages to the people of Judah during a time of great spiritual decline. The people had turned away from God and were engaging in idolatry and other sinful practices. In this verse, God speaks to Jeremiah about the false prophets who were deceiving the people by claiming to speak on His behalf.

Key Points:

  • False Prophets:The verse highlights the presence of false prophets who claimed to speak for God but were actually prophesying lies. These individuals were not sent by God, and He had not commanded or spoken to them. They were misusing His name and leading the people astray.
  • False Vision and Divination:The false prophets were prophesying a false vision and practicing divination. Divination refers to the attempt to gain knowledge or insight through occult or supernatural means. Instead of seeking God’s guidance and speaking His truth, these prophets relied on deceptive practices.
  • Deceit of Their Heart:The false prophets were driven by the deceit of their own hearts. They were not motivated by a genuine desire to serve God or bring His message to the people. Their intentions were selfish, and they misled the people for personal gain or influence.
  • God’s Warning:Through this verse, God warns His people to be discerning and cautious of false prophets. He wants them to recognize the deception and falsehood being spread in His name. It emphasizes the importance of testing the words of those who claim to speak for God against the truth of His Word.
  • Lessons and Applications:

    • Discernment:The presence of false prophets in Jeremiah’s time serves as a reminder for us to exercise discernment in our own lives. We should test every teaching or prophecy against the Word of God to ensure its authenticity.
    • Trusting God’s Word:This verse highlights the importance of relying on God’s Word as the ultimate source of truth. The Bible is God’s inspired and infallible Word, and it provides a solid foundation for discerning truth from falsehood.
    • Warning against Deception:Just as the people of Judah were warned about false prophets, we must also be cautious about being deceived by false teachings or individuals claiming to speak on God’s behalf. We should seek the guidance of the Holy Spirit and study the Scriptures to avoid being misled.
    • Heart Motivation:This verse reminds us to examine our own hearts and motivations. It encourages us to serve God with sincerity, integrity, and a genuine desire to honor Him rather than seeking personal gain or influence.

In summary, Jeremiah 14:14 warns about the presence of false prophets who prophesied lies in God’s name. It calls for discernment, a reliance on God’s Word, caution against deception, and a sincere heart in serving God.
