Jeremiah 46:1

The word of the Lord which came to Jeremiah the prophet against the Gentiles;

Jeremiah 46:1 (KJV)

Jeremiah 46:1 opens a new section in the book of Jeremiah, introducing a series of prophetic oracles against foreign nations. Jeremiah was called by God to deliver messages primarily to Judah and Jerusalem, yet here the word of the Lord came to him concerning the Gentiles, the surrounding nations. This heading sets the stage for the judgments that follow in chapters 46 through 51, beginning with Egypt.

The phrase “The word of the LORD” affirms that the message originates from God Himself, not from the prophet’s own thoughts. The KJV rendering “against the Gentiles” is understood by many translations as “concerning the nations,” indicating that the oracle is directed toward the surrounding Gentile peoples. This verse establishes that God’s prophetic word addresses the affairs of all peoples, revealing His universal sovereignty and moral governance.

Jeremiah’s role as a prophet to the nations is directly supported by Jeremiah 1:5, where God set him apart and appointed him as a prophet to the nations. The subsequent verses (Jeremiah 46:2-28) prophesy against Egypt, warning of divine retribution due to their rebellion against God. This section demonstrates that God’s concern and authority extend beyond Israel to all nations.

Though this prophecy was directed toward ancient Gentile nations, believers today can learn that God is just and will bring judgment upon persistent wickedness. It reinforces the truth that God’s authority transcends national boundaries, and He holds all nations accountable for their actions. This calls believers to live in reverence before the sovereign Lord of all the earth.

God’s word is active and directed beyond the borders of Israel, demonstrating His concern for the entire world. As believers, we are reminded that no nation or power lies outside His rule. This truth invites us to trust in His righteous purposes and to align our lives with His will, knowing that He governs the affairs of all peoples.
