Job 28:27

Then did he see it, and declare it; he prepared it, yea, and searched it out.

Job 28:27 (KJV)

In Job 28, Job reflects on the hidden nature of wisdom. He observes that wisdom cannot be found in the land of the living, the deep, or the sea; it is hidden from all living creatures. Verse 27 declares that God alone sees, declares, establishes, and searches out wisdom. These four verbs emphasize God’s complete knowledge and sovereign control over wisdom.

The verse highlights the incomprehensible wisdom of God, which surpasses human understanding. The KJV wording “he prepared it” suggests that God established wisdom as a firm reality, and “searched it out” indicates His exhaustive understanding. God’s wisdom is not something humans can discover on their own; it is revealed by God. The verse also shows that God not only possesses wisdom but also approves and establishes it, as seen in His works of nature and providence. The immediate context, verse 26, mentions God making a decree for the rain and a way for the lightning of the thunder, showing that God’s wisdom is displayed in creation.

The following verse, Job 28:28, states that the fear of the Lord is wisdom and to depart from evil is understanding, providing the practical application of the chapter. This verse points to the truth that true wisdom originates in God and is revealed through His creation and His Word. The chapter contrasts human efforts to find wisdom with the divine revelation of wisdom. The verse serves as a doxology within the discourse, acknowledging God’s unique role as the source and revealer of wisdom. It prepares the reader for the concluding statement in verse 28, which directs humans to fear the Lord and depart from evil as the path to wisdom.

  • Reverence for God: Job’s reflections on God’s wisdom call us to develop a deep reverence for God. Recognizing that God’s wisdom far surpasses our own should lead us to approach Him with awe and humility. We should acknowledge that we have limitations in understanding His ways and trust in His sovereignty.

  • Pursuit of Wisdom: While we may not fully grasp the depths of God’s wisdom, we are encouraged to seek wisdom and understanding. Proverbs 9:10 reminds us that “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.” We can pursue wisdom by studying God’s Word, praying for discernment, and seeking wise counsel. As we grow in wisdom, we gain a deeper appreciation for God’s infinite wisdom.

  • Trusting in God’s Plan: Job’s experience teaches us to trust in God’s plan, even when we don’t understand the reasons for our circumstances. Just as Job struggled with his suffering, we may face trials that seem beyond our comprehension. In those times, we can find solace in knowing that God’s wisdom is at work, and He has a purpose even in our pain.

Job 28:27 reminds us of the unfathomable wisdom of God. It calls us to revere Him, pursue wisdom, and trust in His sovereign plan. May we always seek to grow in understanding and lean on God’s wisdom, even when we can’t fully grasp it.
