Job 36:5
Behold, God is mighty, and despiseth not any: he is mighty in strength and wisdom.
Job 36:5 (KJV)
Context
Elihu speaks these words to Job during a time of deep suffering and confusion. Job has questioned why he suffers, and his friends have offered incomplete answers. Elihu, though younger, steps forward to declare the greatness of God. This verse sits within his larger speech about God’s justice and care for the afflicted.
Meaning
Elihu begins with “Behold, God is mighty.” This is not a casual observation but a call to pay attention. God’s might means He has absolute power over creation, history, and every human life. Yet this power is not cold or distant. The next phrase, “and despiseth not any,” shows that God does not look down on anyone. He does not reject the poor, the weak, or the suffering. His greatness does not make Him proud or uncaring.
Elihu then adds, “he is mighty in strength and wisdom.” Strength alone could be dangerous, but God’s power is joined with perfect wisdom. He knows what He is doing. His decisions are not random or harsh. They come from deep understanding and perfect justice. This combination of power and wisdom means God can both protect and guide His people.
Biblical connections
The surrounding verses show that God gives the afflicted their rights and watches over the righteous (Job 36:6-7). This confirms that God’s might is used for the good of those who trust Him. His wisdom is not like human wisdom, which is often limited by pride or fear. God’s wisdom is complete and always works with His power.
Application
When life feels confusing, this verse invites us to remember who God is. He is mighty enough to handle every problem, and He is wise enough to know the best way. Because He does not despise anyone, we can come to Him honestly with our questions and pain. We do not need to earn His attention or prove our worth.
Reflection
God’s strength and wisdom are not distant truths. They are meant to comfort and steady us. We can trust that His power works for our good, and His wisdom guides our steps. Even when we do not understand our circumstances, we can rest in the One who is mighty in strength and wisdom.
