Job 38:40

When they couch in their dens, and abide in the covert to lie in wait?

Job 38:40 (KJV)

In the book of Job, a righteous man suffers greatly and questions why. His friends offer their own explanations, but in chapter 38 God answers Job from a whirlwind. God asks a series of questions about the natural world, showing that His wisdom and power are far beyond human understanding. This verse is part of that speech, focusing on the lion.

The verse describes lions couching in their dens and abiding in the covert to lie in wait. The Hebrew word for “couch” means to stretch out or rest, like sheep lying down in Genesis 29:2. The “covert” is a thicket or hiding place, showing the lion’s stealth and patience while hunting. God knows exactly where the lion rests and waits. He sees the fierce beast in its hidden place, and He still provides for it. This reveals God’s intimate knowledge of every creature, even the most dangerous ones. The lion, though powerful and fearsome, depends on God for its next meal. God’s care extends to the wild and untamed, not just to the gentle and familiar.

The lion is a symbol of strength and danger, yet it is under God’s control. The same God who cares for lions also cares for His people. In the New Testament, Colossians 1:16-17 teaches that all things were created through Christ and hold together in Him. So the Creator who sustains the lion is fully revealed in Jesus. This connection assures believers that God’s care is constant and personal. Jesus, through whom all things exist, is the same Lord who watches over every creature.

Recognizing God’s sovereignty calls us to humble trust. When circumstances are unclear, we can submit to His rule, knowing His plan is perfect. Just as wild animals find refuge in their dens, we can find spiritual shelter in God. He meets our needs in His timing. Observing the order of nature deepens our awe of the Creator and reminds us to care for the earth He entrusted to us. If God provides for lions, He will surely provide for His children. We can rest in His faithful care, even when we do not see the full picture.

Job’s experience teaches the value of humility before God. We may not always grasp why events occur, but we can trust that His ways are higher than ours. The God who watches over the lion in its covert also watches over us. Rest in His goodness, knowing that His purposes are good even when the full picture is hidden.
