Joel 3:16
The Lord also shall roar out of Zion, and utter his voice from Jerusalem; and the heavens and the earth shall shake: but the Lord will be the hope of his people, and the strength of the children of Israel.
Joel 3:16 (KJV)
Context
The book of Joel is one of the Minor Prophets in the Old Testament. The prophet wrote to the people of Judah during a time of severe locust infestation and impending judgment. The book carries messages of both judgment and hope, calling God’s people to repentance while promising restoration.
Meaning
In Joel 3:16, the prophet describes the Lord roaring out of Zion. This imagery conveys a powerful manifestation of God’s presence and His coming judgment. Like a lion’s roar, it signals His imminent intervention in human affairs. The roaring emphasizes God’s authority, sovereignty, and power, implying that He is about to act on behalf of His people and against their enemies.
Joel further states that God will utter His voice from Jerusalem, causing the heavens and the earth to shake. This imagery suggests a cosmic upheaval and highlights the magnitude of divine intervention. The shaking of the heavens and earth signifies divine judgment and the disruption of the natural order, which often occurs when God intervenes in human affairs. All creation responds in awe and reverence at His voice.
Amidst the shaking and impending judgment, Joel reassures the people that the Lord will be the hope of His people. Despite the challenges and trials they may face, God remains their source of hope and salvation. The Hebrew words used in other translations convey the idea of a shelter, a place of safety, and a fortress. The same God whose voice shakes the earth is the refuge for His people. This verse teaches that God’s power is not only for judgment but also for the protection and deliverance of those who are His.
Biblical connections
The roaring from Zion and Jerusalem signifies that God acts from His holy mountain, the center of His redemptive purposes. The ultimate expression of this is seen in Christ, who as the Lion of the tribe of Judah, will appear in power and judgment, yet is also the refuge and stronghold for His church. The believer’s hope is not in the stability of the world, which will shake, but in the unchanging character of God, who is both a consuming fire and a safe haven.
Application
While Joel 3:16 in the King James Version does not explicitly mention the strength of the children of Israel, the broader biblical narrative affirms that God provides strength to His covenant people. Believers can rely on His power to sustain them in weakness. Overall, this verse encourages believers to place their hope in God, even in the midst of tumultuous times. It reminds us that God’s presence, power, and faithfulness are sources of comfort and strength. The verse also highlights the impending judgment that awaits those who oppose God’s people. Ultimately, it calls for repentance and trust in the Lord for deliverance and salvation.
