Joel 3:18
“And it shall come to pass in that day, that the mountains shall drop down new wine, and the hills shall flow with milk, and all the rivers of Judah shall flow with waters, and a fountain shall come forth of the house of the LORD, and shall water the valley of Shittim.”
Context:The book of Joel is one of the minor prophets in the Old Testament. It contains a message from God to the people of Judah, warning them of an impending judgment and urging them to repent and turn back to God. Joel 3:18 is part of a prophecy about the future restoration and blessings that God would bring to His people.
Symbolism of abundance:The verse begins by describing a future time, referred to as “that day,” which is often associated with the messianic age or the period of God’s ultimate redemption and restoration. The imagery used in this verse is rich with symbolism. The mountains dropping down new wine and the hills flowing with milk signify abundance and prosperity. It depicts a time of great blessings and overflowing provision from God.
Spiritual blessings:The mention of new wine and milk represents spiritual blessings as well. In the Bible, wine is often associated with joy, celebration, and the presence of the Holy Spirit. Milk symbolizes nourishment, growth, and the Word of God. Together, they indicate the spiritual abundance that God would pour out upon His people.
Restoration of the land:The verse also speaks of the rivers of Judah flowing with waters. This imagery suggests a restoration of the land’s fertility and productivity. In the context of the book of Joel, it is a promise of God’s renewal of the land that had been devastated by locusts and other disasters. It symbolizes the restoration of God’s blessings and the fruitfulness of the land.
The fountain from the house of the Lord:The verse concludes by mentioning a fountain that will come forth out of the house of the Lord and water the valley of Shittim. The house of the Lord refers to the temple, which was the central place of worship for the Israelites. The fountain represents the outpouring of God’s blessings, grace, and spiritual refreshment. The valley of Shittim could be a specific location, but it also represents any place of desolation and barrenness that God will transform into a place of abundance and life.
Spiritual significance:Ultimately, Joel 3:18 points to the future restoration and blessings that God would bring upon His people, both physically and spiritually. It is a promise of His faithfulness, provision, and the outpouring of His Spirit. The verse encourages God’s people to trust in Him, seek His face, and look forward to the time when He will bring about a new era of abundance and spiritual renewal.
