John 10:14

I am the good shepherd, and know my sheep, and am known of mine.

John 10:14 (KJV)

This verse is part of a larger passage in John 10 where Jesus uses the metaphor of a shepherd to describe His relationship with His followers. In the surrounding verses, Jesus contrasts Himself with a hired hand who does not truly care for the sheep, and He speaks of laying down His life for them. This context highlights the depth of His commitment and love.

Jesus calls Himself the “good shepherd,” a title that emphasizes His care, guidance, and provision for His followers. Unlike a hired hand who abandons the sheep in danger, Jesus is the shepherd who protects and nurtures His people, even to the point of giving His life.

Jesus says, “and know my sheep.” This is not merely intellectual awareness; it is an intimate, personal knowledge. He knows each one individually, understands their needs, strengths, weaknesses, and desires. This knowledge reflects a deep, affectionate connection between Jesus and His followers, similar to the way a shepherd knows each sheep by name.

The phrase “and am known of mine” points to a reciprocal relationship. Just as Jesus knows His sheep, His sheep also know Him. This mutual knowledge is grounded in trust and love, and it signifies a personal, intimate relationship where believers recognize and acknowledge Jesus as their Lord, Savior, and Shepherd.

This verse provides assurance and security for believers. Because Jesus is the good shepherd, He is trustworthy, loving, and committed to the well-being of His sheep. His knowledge of His followers and their knowledge of Him demonstrate a strong bond that fosters trust and security. Believers can rest in the certainty that they are fully known and deeply loved by their Shepherd.

Jesus also distinguishes Himself as the good shepherd, implying that there is no other shepherd who can provide the same level of care and guidance. His words invite believers to find true fulfillment and purpose in their relationship with Him, trusting in His care, guidance, and provision as they follow Him.

John 10:14 reminds us of the deep, personal relationship that believers have with Jesus as their good shepherd. It speaks of His intimate knowledge of His followers, their reciprocal knowledge of Him, and the assurance and security that come from being part of His flock. This verse calls us to respond with trust and devotion, knowing that we are known and loved by the Shepherd who gave His life for us.
