John 14:20

At that day ye shall know that I am in my Father, and ye in me, and I in you.

John 14:20 (KJV)

John 14 is part of Jesus’ farewell discourse to His disciples on the night before His crucifixion. He is preparing them for His imminent departure, promising the coming of the Holy Spirit, and reassuring them of His continued presence. In verse 20, Jesus speaks about the profound spiritual union that believers will experience with Him and the Father.

“At that day” refers to the day when the Holy Spirit would come upon the disciples and all believers, pointing to the outpouring of the Holy Spirit on the day of Pentecost, which happened after Jesus’ resurrection and ascension into heaven. On that day, the disciples would come to a fuller, experiential knowledge of the truths Jesus is stating—knowledge realized through the indwelling Spirit, not merely grasped intellectually.

“I am in my Father” emphasizes Jesus’ divine nature and His unity with the Father. Jesus, as the Son of God, shares an inseparable and intimate relationship with the Father. This echoes His earlier teaching in John 14:10-11, where He speaks of being in the Father and the Father in Him, and that His words and works are from the Father.

“Ye in me, and I in you” describes the reciprocal indwelling between Jesus and His followers. Through faith in Jesus Christ, believers become united with Him. This union is spiritual and personal, enabling believers to experience a profound relationship with Christ. The immediate context in John 14:18-19 promises that Jesus will not leave them as orphans, and because He lives, they will live also.

The phrase “ye in me, and I in you” describes the mutual indwelling between Jesus and His followers. It signifies a deep spiritual connection and intimacy. As believers, we are invited to abide in Christ and allow Him to abide in us (John 15:4). This union is not merely external or superficial but an inward reality, made possible through the work of the Holy Spirit.

The Holy Spirit plays a crucial role in establishing this spiritual union between Christ and believers. It is through the Holy Spirit’s presence in the lives of believers that they experience the reality of Christ’s indwelling and the transformational power of His presence. The following verse, John 14:21, connects love for Christ with keeping His commandments and promises that He will manifest Himself to those who love Him.

John 14:20 encourages believers to embrace their union with Christ and live in the awareness of His presence. It reminds us that as followers of Jesus, we are not alone. We have the privilege of experiencing a deep, personal relationship with the Triune God. This verse grounds Christian assurance in the believer’s union with Christ, reminding us that we are loved, chosen, and made righteous in Him.

The union described here is a profound statement of the mutual indwelling of the Father, Son, and believers. It invites us to rest in the reality that Christ dwells in us through the Spirit, and we are held securely in Him. This knowledge transforms how we live, giving us confidence and hope because our life is hidden with Christ in God.
