John 20:10

Posted on 18 May at 14:35
Listen to this article

“Then the disciples went away again unto their own home.”

Context:This verse is a part of the account of Jesus’ resurrection. In the previous verses, Mary Magdalene had come to the tomb early in the morning and found the stone rolled away. She ran to Peter and John to inform them that the Lord’s body was missing. Both disciples raced to the tomb, with John arriving first. He saw the linen clothes lying there but did not go inside. Then, Peter arrived and went into the tomb, also seeing the linen clothes and the napkin that had been around Jesus’ head. After witnessing these things, the disciples went back to their own homes.

Importance of Eyewitness Accounts:In this passage, we see the response of the disciples after visiting the empty tomb. Their encounter with the evidence left behind by Jesus’ resurrection plays a crucial role in establishing the truth of the event. Both Peter and John saw the empty tomb and the linen cloths, which provides evidence for the reality of Jesus’ resurrection. It demonstrates the importance of eyewitness testimonies in verifying historical events.

Faith and Understanding:The disciples’ response also highlights the gradual development of their faith and understanding. Although they had spent time with Jesus during His ministry, they did not yet fully comprehend the Scriptures concerning His resurrection (John 20:9). Their confusion is evident in their return to their homes. They did not immediately grasp the significance of what had taken place.

  • The Impact of the Resurrection:The empty tomb and the subsequent appearances of Jesus to His disciples had a profound impact on their lives. They went on to become bold witnesses for Christ, spreading the message of the Gospel throughout the world. The resurrection of Jesus is the cornerstone of Christianity, providing hope, forgiveness, and eternal life to all who believe.

Application:

– Seek to deepen your understanding of the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Study the Scriptures, read books, and listen to sermons that expound on this foundational truth.

– Reflect on the evidence of the resurrection and allow it to strengthen your faith. Consider the transformed lives of the disciples and the growth of the early church as a result of their encounter with the risen Christ.

– Share the message of the resurrection with others. Just as the disciples became witnesses of this incredible event, we are called to share the good news of Jesus’ victory over sin and death.

Remember, the resurrection of Jesus is central to the Christian faith, and studying passages like John 20:10 can help us grow in our understanding and appreciation of this significant event.
