Context

John 7 records events at the Feast of Tabernacles, a time when the people remembered God’s provision in the wilderness. Jesus went up to Jerusalem and taught in the temple, and the crowd was amazed at His words.

Meaning

The Jews marveled, saying, “How knoweth this man letters, having never learned?” The word “letters” refers to knowledge of the Jewish Scriptures and traditions. They were astonished because Jesus had not studied under a recognized rabbi, yet He spoke with profound insight and authority.

Their question reveals more than surprise. It exposes a tension between human expectations and divine revelation. They judged by outward credentials, not by the truth of His words. Jesus’ knowledge did not come from human institutions but from His intimate relationship with the Father.

Biblical connections

Jesus’ response in John 7:16-17 clarifies the source of His teaching: it was not His own but His who sent Him. He also connects obedience to understanding, saying that anyone who desires to do God’s will shall know whether the teaching is from God.

Application

This verse reminds us that true spiritual understanding comes from God. Human learning is valuable, but it is not the only path to knowing God. We are called to seek Him through prayer, study of His Word, and reliance on the Holy Spirit, who guides us into all truth.
