John 7:15

Context:The seventh chapter of the Gospel of John records events that took place during the Feast of Tabernacles. Jesus had gone up to Jerusalem and was teaching in the temple. The people were amazed at His teaching because it was unlike anything they had heard before.

The Jews’ Marveling:In this verse, we see the reaction of the Jews to Jesus’ teaching. They were astonished and marveled at His knowledge. They couldn’t comprehend how Jesus had acquired such wisdom and understanding of the Scriptures since He had not received formal training as a disciple of a rabbi or religious scholar.

“Letters” and “Never Learned”:The term “letters” refers to knowledge or learning, particularly in the context of Jewish religious education. The Jews were puzzled because Jesus did not have the conventional training that their religious leaders possessed. They were aware of the educational system where students would learn from recognized teachers and rabbis. Jesus, however, did not follow this traditional path, and yet His teaching demonstrated profound insight into the Scriptures and the things of God.

Jesus’ Divine Authority:The marveling of the Jews highlights the divine authority behind Jesus’ teaching. Jesus was not limited by human education or human wisdom but possessed a unique and direct knowledge of God’s truth. Jesus’ knowledge came from His intimate relationship with the Father. He was the Son of God, and His teachings were rooted in divine wisdom.

• Application:This verse serves as a reminder that true spiritual understanding and insight come from God. Human knowledge and learning are valuable, but they are not the sole criteria for comprehending the things of God. Jesus, being fully God and fully man, possessed a wisdom that surpassed human understanding. As followers of Christ, we should seek not only worldly knowledge but also a deep relationship with God through prayer, study of His Word, and reliance on the Holy Spirit to guide us into all truth.
