John 7:17

If any man will do his will, he shall know of the doctrine, whether it be of God, or whether I speak of myself.

John 7:17 (KJV)

Jesus spoke these words in Jerusalem during the Feast of Tabernacles, while teaching in the temple. The people were divided about Him, and the Jewish leaders marveled at His learning, asking how He knew the Scriptures without formal education. In the preceding verse, Jesus declared, “My doctrine is not mine, but his that sent me” (John 7:16). Verse 17 then presents a testable condition for discerning the origin of His teaching.

The phrase “If any man will do his will” emphasizes a willing disposition, not perfect law-keeping. The Greek construction indicates a desire and readiness to obey God’s will—a heart yielded to His requirements. No one perfectly fulfills the law, but the promise is for those who sincerely desire to do it, having that desire wrought in them by God’s grace and Spirit. Such a person “shall know of the doctrine”—will discern and understand whether Jesus’ teaching is from God or from Himself. This knowing is not primarily intellectual but moral and spiritual, granted to those whose hearts are aligned with God’s will.

Jesus’ statement acknowledges the skepticism about His authority. He invites the people to test His teachings against the will of God, assuring them that those who genuinely seek God’s will can recognize that His words are from God. The willingness to obey is the key that unlocks spiritual understanding.

The immediate context continues in verse 18, contrasting the one who speaks from himself and seeks his own glory with the one who seeks the glory of Him who sent Him, who is true and in whom there is no unrighteousness. This reinforces the principle that spiritual discernment of Jesus’ doctrine is inseparable from a surrendered will.

This verse challenges us to examine our hearts and motivations. Are we sincerely seeking and doing God’s will? Are we willing to submit to His teachings? True understanding of God’s truth comes through a surrendered heart, willing to obey Him. When we align ourselves with God’s will, we can discern the truth of His Word and the teachings of Jesus.

  • John 7:17 highlights the importance of having a heart aligned with God’s will and desires. Through a sincere willingness to obey Him, we can discern the truth of His teachings and recognize Jesus’ authority. Let us strive to seek God’s will, submit to His Word, and grow in understanding and obedience to Him.

Consider your own posture toward God’s will. Is there an area where you have been hesitant to obey, waiting for fuller understanding before you act? Jesus’ promise turns that order around: the willingness to do God’s will opens the way to knowing His truth. Surrender is not the end of understanding but the beginning of it.
