John 8:26

I have many things to say and to judge of you: but he that sent me is true; and I speak to the world those things which I have heard of him.

John 8:26 (KJV)

John 8:26 is part of a larger conversation between Jesus and the Jews in the temple. The immediate setting includes Jesus’ declaration that he is the Light of the world (John 8:12) and the Pharisees’ challenge to his testimony (John 8:13). In this verse, Jesus responds to those questioning his authority and identity.

Jesus begins by asserting that he has many things to say and to judge concerning his hearers. The phrase “to judge of you” means to reprove or condemn, revealing Jesus’ divine insight into their character, pride, and hypocrisy. Yet Jesus indicates that this was not his present business; he came not to condemn but to save. The central emphasis of the verse is Jesus’ absolute dependence on and fidelity to the One who sent him, God the Father. Jesus declares that the Father is true, using the Greek word alēthēs, meaning truthful and reliable. As the Son of God, Jesus speaks only what he has heard from the Father. His words are not based on his own authority or opinions but on the divine revelation he has received.

This verse connects to the broader Johannine theme of Jesus as the sent Son who reveals the Father. In John 7:16, Jesus says his doctrine is not his own but his that sent him, reinforcing the same point of divine origin. The following verse, John 8:27, notes that the hearers did not understand that Jesus was speaking about his Father, clarifying that “he that sent me” refers to God the Father.

Jesus states that he speaks to the world the things he has heard from God. This reveals the universal scope of his mission and message. Jesus came not only for the Jews but for all people. His teachings and words are meant to reach everyone, regardless of their background or ethnicity. Jesus offers the truth of God to the world, providing a pathway to salvation and reconciliation with God. This verse reminds us of the authority of Jesus and the reliability of God’s Word. As believers, we can trust in the truthfulness of God’s message as revealed through Jesus Christ. It also calls us to listen attentively to Jesus’ teachings and apply them in our lives. We should seek to align our thoughts, words, and actions with the truth of God’s Word and share that truth with others, just as Jesus did.

John 8:26 highlights Jesus’ authority, the truthfulness of God, and the universal scope of Jesus’ mission to speak God’s message to the world. It encourages us to trust in God’s Word and live according to its truth.
