John 8:44

Listen to this article

“Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.”

Context:To understand the meaning of a verse, it’s important to consider its context. In John 8:44, Jesus is engaged in a discussion with the Jewish religious leaders who opposed Him. They claimed to be descendants of Abraham and children of God, but Jesus confronted them, exposing their true spiritual condition.

Identifying the source:Jesus tells the religious leaders that they are of their father, the devil. He is not speaking in a literal sense but referring to their spiritual alignment and the influence on their actions. Jesus highlights the contrast between their claims to righteousness and their actual deeds, which align with the desires of the devil.

The devil as a murderer:Jesus reveals that the devil was a murderer from the beginning. This statement refers to Satan’s role in the fall of humanity in the Garden of Eden. Through deception, he led Adam and Eve into sin, which resulted in spiritual death for all of mankind. The devil seeks to destroy and bring death, while God offers life and salvation.

The absence of truth in the devil:Jesus states that the devil does not abide in the truth because there is no truth in him. Satan is the ultimate deceiver and the father of lies. He distorts the truth and seeks to confuse, mislead, and deceive people. His goal is to undermine God’s truth and lead people away from the path of righteousness.

Lies as the devil’s language:Jesus explains that when the devil speaks a lie, he speaks from his own nature. Lying is characteristic of Satan, and he is the originator and propagator of falsehood. This emphasizes the importance of truthfulness and the need to discern between truth and deception.

The verse serves as a powerful reminder that there are spiritual forces at work in the world, and our actions and words can reveal our spiritual alignment. It encourages us to be discerning and to align ourselves with the truth of God rather than falling prey to the lies of the devil. Jesus’ words in this verse are a call to seek the truth, reject deception, and follow Him as the way, the truth, and the life (John 14:6).
