John 8:44

Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.

Context

Jesus spoke these words during a heated exchange with Jewish religious leaders who claimed to be Abraham’s children and children of God. He confronted them because their actions contradicted their claims. His words expose their true spiritual condition, showing that their behavior revealed a different father.

Meaning

When Jesus says, “Ye are of your father the devil,” He is not speaking of physical descent but of spiritual alignment and influence. The phrase “of your father” means they are under the devil’s authority and follow his example. Their will is to carry out his desires, just as a child imitates a parent. This is not about sharing his nature but about willingly obeying his direction.

The devil is described as a murderer from the beginning. This points to his role in the fall of humanity in the Garden of Eden, where his deception led Adam and Eve into sin and brought spiritual death to all. He seeks to destroy and bring death, while God offers life and salvation.

The devil also “abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him.” He is the ultimate deceiver, the originator of lies, and the source of all falsehood. When he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own character, for lying is his native language. He distorts truth to confuse, mislead, and turn people away from God.

Application

This verse is a sobering reminder that our words and actions reveal our spiritual parentage. It calls us to examine ourselves: do our desires and deeds reflect the truth of God or the deception of the devil? We are urged to be discerning, to reject lies, and to align ourselves with God’s truth.

Reflection

Jesus’ words are a warning and an invitation. They warn that persisting in falsehood places us under the devil’s influence. They also invite us to turn from deception and follow Christ, who is the truth and the source of life.
