Joshua 10:7

So Joshua ascended from Gilgal, he, and all the people of war with him, and all the mighty men of valour.

Joshua 10:7 (KJV)

This verse sits within Israel’s conquest of Canaan under Joshua. The Gibeonites had made a peace treaty with Israel, but five Amorite kings attacked them. The Gibeonites sent an urgent plea for help, and Joshua responded by leading his army from Gilgal, the Israelite base camp in the plains of Jericho. The ascent from Gilgal to the battle area shows movement to higher ground, a deliberate advance toward the enemy.

The phrase “all the people of war with him, and all the mighty men of valour” stresses the unity and strength of Israel’s forces. It likely refers to a select, capable contingent rather than the entire camp, which numbered hundreds of thousands. Joshua had the loyalty of skilled and courageous warriors ready to fight. Their collective action shows a shared commitment to God’s plan for possessing the land. This was not a hesitant or partial response; Joshua acted with the full force he could muster.

Gilgal was also where Israel renewed its covenant with God through circumcision (Joshua 5:2-9). Joshua’s obedience here reflects his faithfulness to the covenant made with Gibeon, even though that treaty had been secured by deception. His swift response, followed by an all-night march (Joshua 10:9), demonstrates courage and determination. This sets the stage for the miraculous victory where God fought for Israel. The broader conquest narrative shows God fulfilling His promises to His people as they take possession of the land.

Joshua’s readiness to act teaches the importance of unity, courage, and obedience in fulfilling God’s purposes. Believers are called to support one another and to move forward in faith, trusting God’s guidance even when the path is difficult. The verse encourages steadfastness and reliance on God’s strength in the face of challenges. When we see a brother or sister in need, we can respond quickly and with our best efforts, knowing that God goes with us.

Consider how you respond when others in need call for help. Joshua did not delay, and he did not go alone. He led with all his available strength. This challenges us to be people of action, ready to serve God and others with the same commitment and courage. Ask God to give you a willing heart and a ready spirit, so that you may be a source of help and hope to those around you.
