Joshua 12:22

The king of Kedesh, one; the king of Jokneam of Carmel, one;

Joshua 12:22 (KJV)

Joshua 12 records the kings defeated by Israel under Joshua during the conquest of Canaan. This verse names two of them: the king of Kedesh and the king of Jokneam of Carmel. The chapter lists thirty-one kings in all (Joshua 12:24), showing the completeness of the victory. Each king is individually counted, which highlights God’s faithfulness in delivering specific enemies into Israel’s hands.

Kedesh was a city in the northern region, later allotted to the tribe of Naphtali. It became one of the cities of refuge, where someone who unintentionally caused a death could flee for safety (Joshua 20:7; Joshua 21:32). Jokneam was near Mount Carmel, in the territory of Zebulun, and was given to the Levites (Joshua 19:11; Joshua 21:34). The repeated word “one” after each king emphasizes that every enemy was counted and conquered. This orderly list shows that God’s promise to give Israel the land was fulfilled in a detailed manner.

The defeat of these kings fulfilled God’s promise to give the land to Abraham’s descendants. The later roles of Kedesh and Jokneam show a striking change: places once ruled by enemies became places of mercy and worship. Kedesh became a refuge for the innocent, and Jokneam was dedicated to the Levites’ service. This demonstrates God’s power to transform opposition into blessing.

God keeps His promises thoroughly and in detail. No enemy or obstacle can stand against His purposes. Believers can trust that God will complete what He has begun, even when the path seems long. The transformation of these cities reminds us that God can repurpose difficult situations for His glory.

Consider how God has turned difficult situations in your life into opportunities for mercy and service. Just as He repurposed Kedesh and Jokneam, He can redeem your past struggles for His glory.
