Joshua 13:14

Only unto the tribe of Levi he gave none inheritance; the sacrifices of the Lord God of Israel made by fire are their inheritance, as he said unto them.

Joshua 13:14 (KJV)

Joshua was dividing the land of Canaan among the tribes of Israel, as the Lord had commanded. The tribe of Levi received no territory, because God had set them apart for service in the tabernacle and priesthood. This was not an oversight but a divine arrangement, promised long before.

The Levites’ inheritance was the sacrifices of the Lord made by fire. This means they were supported by the portions of offerings brought by the other tribes, including meat from burnt sacrifices. God also gave them cities, pastures, and tithes for their sustenance while they served at the tabernacle and later the temple.

Their exclusion from a land inheritance showed their complete dedication to God’s work. The Levites taught the law, led worship, and cared for the spiritual life of the nation. Their portion was not material wealth but the privilege of serving the Lord directly. The Lord Himself was their portion, and His provision was sufficient for all their needs.

Numbers 18:20 confirms this arrangement, where the Lord told Aaron, “I am thy part and thine inheritance among the children of Israel.” This shows that the Levites’ true inheritance was the Lord Himself, not land. The same truth appears in other passages, reminding God’s people that He is their lasting portion.

This passage reminds believers to devote themselves fully to God’s service. Our greatest inheritance is knowing and serving Him. God’s provision may come in unexpected forms; just as the Levites were cared for through cities and offerings rather than land, believers can trust that God provides what is best for them.

  • True inheritance is found in God, not in possessions.

  • God’s faithfulness fulfills every promise He makes.

  • Serving the Lord brings its own reward and security.

Consider what you treasure most. The Levites found their security in God’s presence and provision. In the same way, true inheritance is found in God, not in possessions. Trust Him to supply your needs, even when His plan differs from your expectations. He is faithful, and He will never abandon those who serve Him.
