Joshua 13:18

And Jahazah, and Kedemoth, and Mephaath,

Joshua 13:18 (KJV)

Joshua 13:18 appears within the larger account of Israel’s settlement in the Promised Land. After the death of Moses, Joshua led the people in taking possession of Canaan, and the land was then divided among the tribes. This verse belongs to the section describing the inheritance of the tribe of Reuben, one of the two and a half tribes that settled east of the Jordan River in the region called Transjordan or Gilead. The list of cities here is part of the record of how God fulfilled His promise to give Israel the land He had sworn to their fathers.

The verse names three cities: Jahazah, Kedemoth, and Mephaath. Jahazah, also spelled Jahaz or Jahaza, was a Levitical city within Reuben’s territory and is known as the place where Israel defeated Sihon king of the Amorites (Numbers 21:23; Deuteronomy 2:32). Kedemoth was near a wilderness of the same name, from which Moses sent messengers with words of peace to Sihon (Deuteronomy 2:26). Mephaath later appears as a Levitical city with pasturelands (Joshua 21:37). These cities were not merely names on a map; they were real places where God’s people lived and worshipped. Their inclusion in the biblical record shows the concreteness of God’s promises and the historical reality of Israel’s inheritance.

The allotment to Reuben, along with Gad and the half-tribe of Manasseh, was granted because these tribes requested to settle east of the Jordan, on the condition that they would help their fellow Israelites conquer Canaan (Numbers 32). The inclusion of Levitical cities within these territories ensured that the tribe of Levi, which received no land inheritance, had places to dwell and pasturelands for their livestock. This arrangement reflects God’s provision for all His people, including those set apart for priestly service.

This verse reminds us of God’s faithfulness in fulfilling His covenant promises. Just as He gave Israel the land He had promised, He is faithful to keep His word to us. The tribes of Reuben and Gad also demonstrate the importance of obedience and unity: they received their inheritance, but they did not abandon their brothers in the conquest of Canaan. Their example encourages us to seek God’s guidance and to honor our commitments to one another. Finally, the provision of cities for the Levites shows that God cares for the needs of all His people, and He knows how to provide for us in ways we may not expect.

Though the exact locations of Jahazah, Kedemoth, and Mephaath are not precisely known today, their mention in Scripture testifies to God’s sovereignty over history and His care for His people. These cities were part of a real inheritance, given by a faithful God. As we read this list, we can trust that the God who kept His promises to Israel will also keep His promises to us.
