Joshua 14:3

For Moses had given the inheritance of two tribes and an half tribe on the other side Jordan: but unto the Levites he gave none inheritance among them.

Joshua 14:3 (KJV)

Joshua 14:3 appears in the account of dividing the land of Canaan among the Israelites. After crossing the Jordan River, the people received the Promised Land as God had promised. This verse explains that Moses had already given land to two and a half tribes on the eastern side of the Jordan, while the Levites received no land inheritance among the other tribes.

The two and a half tribes were Reuben, Gad, and half the tribe of Manasseh. They had asked to settle in the fertile pastures east of the Jordan, and Moses granted their request (Numbers 32:1-5). Their inheritance was settled before the remaining tribes received their portions in Canaan. This verse sets the stage for the distribution of land to the remaining nine and a half tribes.

The Levites were descendants of Levi, the son of Jacob. God set them apart for service to the tabernacle and the priesthood. Because of this calling, they did not receive a territorial inheritance like the other tribes. Instead, they were given cities and surrounding pasturelands scattered among the tribes (Numbers 35:1-8; Joshua 21:1-42). Their provision came from the offerings and tithes of the people.

This arrangement was deliberate. The Lord Himself was the Levites’ inheritance (Numbers 18:20; Deuteronomy 18:1-2). Moses, himself a Levite, did not secure land for his own tribe, showing his trust in God’s provision. The Levites’ lack of land kept them free to minister to all the tribes, teaching the law, offering sacrifices, and guiding worship.

The verse also shows the faithfulness of God. He had promised Abraham that his descendants would inherit the land (Genesis 12:7). Here, that promise moves closer to fulfillment as the tribes receive their portions. The Levites’ unique position points to a deeper truth: true inheritance is found in relationship with God, not in earthly possessions.

Joshua 14:3 reminds believers that God values different roles within His people. Just as the Levites had a distinct calling, each believer has been given gifts to serve the body of Christ (1 Corinthians 12:12-27). Not everyone has the same responsibilities, but every role matters.

The Levites depended on God’s provision through the tithes and offerings of the people. This teaches that those who serve God can trust Him to meet their needs, even without a visible inheritance. It also encourages believers to support those who minister to them.

This verse invites readers to consider what they truly value. The Levites received no land, yet they had the Lord Himself. In the same way, a believer’s greatest treasure is not material wealth but a living relationship with God. When earthly security is absent, God remains faithful to provide for those who serve Him. The Levites’ inheritance was not a portion of soil but the presence of God, and that same presence is available to every believer today.
