Joshua 14:2

By lot was their inheritance, as the Lord commanded by the hand of Moses, for the nine tribes, and for the half tribe.

Joshua 14:2 (KJV)

The book of Joshua records the Israelites’ conquest and division of the Promised Land under Joshua’s leadership. After Moses died, Joshua led the people across the Jordan River to possess the land God had promised. This verse describes how the inheritance was assigned by lot, as the LORD commanded through Moses, for the nine and a half tribes west of the Jordan. The two and a half tribes had already received their land east of the Jordan (Numbers 32:33). The tribe of Levi did not receive a territorial inheritance; instead, they were given cities to dwell in, as the LORD had commanded (Joshua 13:14).

The casting of lots was a common method in the Old Testament for determining God’s will. It ensured fairness and removed partiality or favouritism. The lot was cast in the presence of the LORD, signifying that the outcome was His decision. The phrase “by the hand of Moses” emphasizes that the command originated from God and was mediated through His servant. This division was not random or humanly determined but directed by God Himself, fulfilling the predictions of Jacob and Moses.

This verse refers back to Numbers 26:55-56 and Numbers 33:54, where God instructed Moses to divide the land as an inheritance. The distribution by lot prevented disputes and established a lasting order among the tribes. Each tribe’s inheritance was part of the whole, highlighting the unity of the tribes in receiving their portions. The land they received was a tangible fulfillment of God’s covenant promises to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

  • Obedience to God’s commands: The Israelites followed the LORD’s command and divided the land according to His instructions. This teaches us the importance of obedience in our own lives. When we align ourselves with God’s will, we experience His blessings and guidance.

  • Fairness and impartiality: The casting of lots ensured a fair distribution. This reminds us to treat people equitably and avoid favouritism or bias in our dealings with others.

  • Trusting in God’s guidance: The Israelites relied on the lot to determine their inheritance, demonstrating trust in God’s sovereignty. Similarly, we should trust in God’s wisdom and guidance, knowing that He directs our paths according to His perfect plan.

  • God’s faithfulness to His promises: The division of the land is a reminder of God’s faithfulness in fulfilling His promises. We can trust that God is faithful to His promises in our lives as well.

Joshua 14:2 highlights the division of the land among the Israelite tribes through casting lots, as commanded by the LORD through Moses. This passage teaches us about obedience, fairness, trust, and God’s faithfulness. It reminds us that God is sovereign over the allocation of blessings and that His methods are just and wise.
