Joshua 15:21

And the uttermost cities of the tribe of the children of Judah toward the coast of Edom southward were Kabzeel, and Eder, and Jagur,

Joshua 15:21 (KJV)

This verse belongs to the detailed record of how Joshua divided the Promised Land among the twelve tribes of Israel. After leading the people into Canaan, Joshua assigned each tribe its inheritance. Here the focus is on the southernmost cities given to the tribe of Judah, near the border of Edom. The region is the Negev, a dry southern plain. Even the most remote towns were named, showing the care taken in the distribution.

The verse lists three cities: Kabzeel, Eder, and Jagur. Kabzeel later became known as the home of Benaiah, one of David’s mighty warriors (2 Samuel 23:20). Eder appears again in Joshua 15:42, though its exact location is uncertain. Jagur is not mentioned elsewhere in Scripture. These names may seem obscure, but they confirm the historical reality of Israel’s settlement. The listing is precise, reflecting the order and structure of God’s plan.

The mention of Edom reminds readers of the boundaries of the land promised to Abraham’s descendants. God had pledged to give this land to Israel, and the detailed inventory of cities demonstrates His faithfulness. The southern border was not forgotten; it was recorded with the same accuracy as the rest of the territory. This careful record shows that God’s promises are specific and reliable.

God cares about the details of His people’s lives. Just as He designated every city, He knows each person’s circumstances and needs. Believers can trust that God’s provision extends to every part of life, even the places that seem remote or unimportant. The record of these cities encourages gratitude for God’s faithful care.

This verse invites readers to see God’s sovereign hand in history. The distribution of the land was not random; it fulfilled a promise made centuries earlier. When we read lists of names and places, we can pause to worship a God who keeps His word completely. His plans are orderly, and His faithfulness reaches to the farthest corners of our lives.
