Joshua 15:31
And Ziklag, and Madmannah, and Sansannah,
Joshua 15:31 (KJV)
Context
This verse belongs to the long list of cities allotted to the tribe of Judah when the land of Canaan was divided among the tribes of Israel. These three towns lay in the Negev, the dry southern region of Judah. The list records the inheritance given to Judah, showing that God kept His promise to give the Israelites the land He had sworn to their ancestors. The detailed recording of these towns reflects the historical reality of the conquest and settlement.
Meaning
Ziklag, Madmannah, and Sansannah were real places. Ziklag later became the town that Achish, king of Gath, gave to David (1 Samuel 27:6). While David fled from Saul, he lived there and used it as a base. From Ziklag, David pursued the Amalekites who had raided the town and recovered his people and possessions (1 Samuel 30). Madmannah and Sansannah appear only in lists like this one; their exact locations are unknown, but they were part of Judah’s territory.
Biblical connections
The detailed recording of these towns shows that God cares about specific places and ordinary details. The land given to Judah also points forward to the tribe from which the Messiah would come, as promised in Genesis 49:10 and fulfilled in Matthew 1:1-16. Thus, a simple list of cities is tied to the larger story of redemption. The preservation of these names in Scripture indicates that every place and person matters to God.
Application
These names remind us that God’s promises are concrete and historical. He works through real places and real events. When our lives seem ordinary or unnoticed, God still sees and cares. He is faithful to provide for His people, just as He gave Judah its inheritance. This encourages trust in God’s faithful provision and attention to detail, even in aspects of life that seem insignificant.
Reflection
God’s attention to detail in this list encourages us to trust Him with every part of our lives. Nothing is too small for His care. His plan unfolds through history and leads to Christ, so we can rest in His faithful provision.
