Joshua 15:30
And Eltolad, and Chesil, and Hormah,
Joshua 15:30 (KJV)
Context
The book of Joshua records how Israel took possession of the Promised Land under Joshua’s leadership. In chapter 15, the land is divided among the tribes, and this verse lists three towns within Judah’s inheritance. This list is part of a larger catalog of cities and villages, showing the orderly distribution of the land.
Meaning
Eltolad, Chesil, and Hormah were real places given to Judah. Eltolad appears only here and as “Tolad” in 1 Chronicles 4:29, likely a small settlement. Chesil is also called Bethul or Bethuel in Joshua 19:4 and 1 Chronicles 4:30, showing that towns sometimes had more than one name. Hormah was earlier known as Zephath, a city devoted to destruction and later renamed (Judges 1:17). These names remind us that God knows each place and its history.
Biblical connections
These towns also appear in the list for Simeon (Joshua 19:4), indicating a shared or transferred inheritance. Hormah connects to Israel’s earlier defeat at that place (Numbers 14:45), yet later it was conquered and allotted, showing God’s redemptive work over time. The Greek version calls Chesil “Baithel,” confirming the same town under different names.
Application
God keeps His promises with careful detail. Even obscure towns are recorded, reminding us that He values every part of His plan and every place where His people live. We can trust that God is faithful in the small and hidden areas of our lives, not just the visible ones.
Reflection
This list may seem simple, but it testifies to God’s faithfulness in giving Israel the land. The recording of these towns shows the historical reality of the conquest and the meticulous care with which God’s promises were fulfilled. We can trust that He also orders our lives with purpose, even in details we do not fully understand.
