Joshua 15:29

Baalah, and Iim, and Azem,

Joshua 15:29 (KJV)

This verse belongs to a long list of cities given to the tribe of Judah. After Israel entered Canaan, Joshua led the people in taking the land, and Joshua 15 records how the territory was divided. Judah received its portion first, and this list shows the southern towns within that inheritance. The list is not merely geographical; it demonstrates the fulfillment of God’s promise to give Israel the land. Each named city represents a tangible part of the inheritance, a legal and covenantal act.

The three names are Baalah, Iim, and Azem. Baalah is also called Kiriath Jearim in other passages, and it held the Ark of the Covenant for a time after the Philistines returned it (1 Samuel 7:1-2). Iim and Azem are not described elsewhere in detail, so they were likely small settlements that served the daily life of Judah’s people. Their obscurity does not lessen their importance in God’s record.

Some cities in Judah’s list were later shared with the tribe of Simeon, whose inheritance lay inside Judah’s territory (Joshua 19:3; 1 Chronicles 4:29). This shows that the land was not only divided but also arranged so that different tribes could live together. The mention of Baalah in Joshua 19:44 as a city of Dan is uncertain and should not be pressed. The verse’s significance lies in its role within the comprehensive record of God’s faithfulness.

This list reminds us that God keeps His promises in specific and detailed ways. Every city, even those with no further mention, was part of the inheritance He had promised to Abraham’s descendants. God cares about the particulars of His people’s lives, not just the broad outcome. The inclusion of these names affirms that God’s faithfulness extends to every place and every person, even those that seem insignificant.

We can trust that God is faithful to provide for His people. The careful recording of these places shows that nothing is too small for His attention. As the Israelites were called to possess what God gave, we are called to receive and use what He entrusts to us, knowing that His promises stand firm. This verse also highlights the importance of obedience and trust in God’s provision.
