Joshua 15:37

Zenan, and Hadashah, and Migdal–gad,

Joshua 15:37 (KJV)

Joshua 15:37 belongs to the detailed record of the land given to the tribe of Judah. The chapter lists many cities and their boundaries as the Israelites prepared to settle in the Promised Land. This verse names three towns in the lowland region called the Shephelah: Zenan, Hadashah, and Migdal-gad. The whole allotment was decided by casting lots under Joshua’s leadership, as described in Joshua 14:1-2. This method showed that God Himself directed the distribution of the land.

Zenan appears only here in the Bible. Some scholars connect it with Zaanan in Micah 1:11, where the people are called to mourn. If this link is correct, the town later became a place of sorrow during judgment. Hadashah was a very small settlement; later Jewish tradition says it had only fifty houses. Its name means “new,” perhaps pointing to a newly built place. Migdal-gad means “tower of Gad.” Gad was one of the twelve sons of Jacob, but his tribe settled east of the Jordan River. The name may mean “tower of fortune” or refer to a watchtower named after Gad. The exact reason for the name is not clear.

These cities were part of the inheritance God promised to Abraham’s descendants, as recorded in Genesis 12:7 and 15:18. The detailed lists in Joshua show that God keeps His word in specific and concrete ways. Even the smallest towns were included in the promise. This reminds us that God cares about every place and every person, not only the famous ones. The historical reality of these locations also confirms the accuracy of Scripture.

Although these cities are obscure, their mention teaches us to value what seems ordinary. God gave each tribe a specific portion, and each town had its place. In the same way, every believer has a secure inheritance in Christ, who fulfills the promises of the land. We are called to be faithful stewards of what God has entrusted to us, whether time, talents, relationships, or resources. Paying attention to details and honoring boundaries reflects the care God showed in His promises.

The verse invites us to trust that God’s plan includes every detail of our lives. Just as He recorded the names of small towns, He knows each of us personally. His faithfulness extends to the overlooked and the forgotten. We can rest in the certainty that what God has promised, He will fulfill. This quiet confidence gives us peace as we walk in the inheritance He has prepared for us.
