Joshua 18:22
And Beth–arabah, and Zemaraim, and Beth–el,
Joshua 18:22 (KJV)
Context
Joshua 18:22 belongs to the account of dividing the land of Canaan among the tribes of Israel. After the conquest of Jericho and Ai, Joshua and the people followed God’s instruction to distribute the land as an inheritance. This verse is part of the allotment for the tribe of Benjamin, listing three cities within its territory. The allotment took place at Shiloh, where lots were cast for the remaining seven tribes.
Meaning
Beth-arabah means “house of the desert” or “house of the steppe.” It was a town in the wilderness region, likely near the Dead Sea or the Jordan Valley. Its exact location is uncertain, but it appears elsewhere as a landmark (Joshua 15:6, 61; 2 Chronicles 20:2).
Zemaraim means “double woolens” or “double fleece.” It was a city in the hill country of Benjamin. Some connect its name to Zemira, a son of Canaan (Genesis 10:18), suggesting the city may have been built by his descendants. A mountain of the same name existed in Ephraim, so the city may have been near that mountain.
Bethel means “house of God.” It holds great spiritual significance. Jacob encountered God there in a dream, seeing a ladder reaching to heaven and receiving God’s promises (Genesis 28:10-22). Later, Bethel became a religious center, though Jeroboam set up one of his golden calves there (1 Kings 12:28-29).
Biblical connections
Bethel appears throughout the lives of Abraham, Jacob, and Samuel. Its inclusion in Benjamin’s territory shows the continuity of God’s dealings with His people. The detailed listing of cities demonstrates the precision and order with which God fulfilled His promise to give the land to Israel. Each city name carries meaning, from “house of the desert” to “house of God.“
Application
Each city name carries a lesson. “House of the desert” reminds us that God is present even in barren places. “House of God” points to His presence in worship and covenant. The careful division of land shows that God keeps His promises in exact detail. We can trust Him to provide for us in both wilderness and settled places.
Reflection
God’s faithfulness is seen in the small details of history. He gave each tribe a specific inheritance, and He knows the details of our lives too. The names of these cities remind us that God is with us in every season, whether we are in a desert or in a place of worship. We can rest in His faithful care.
