Joshua 19:38
And Iron, and Migdal–el, Horem, and Beth–anath, and Beth–shemesh; nineteen cities with their villages.
Joshua 19:38 (KJV)
Context
The book of Joshua records the division of the Promised Land among the twelve tribes of Israel after their conquest under Joshua’s leadership. In Joshua 19, the territory allotted to the tribe of Naphtali is described. Naphtali was one of the twelve tribes, named after Jacob’s son born to Bilhah, Rachel’s maidservant. This verse concludes the list of Naphtali’s cities, naming the final five and stating the total as nineteen cities with their villages.
Meaning
The city names carry meaning. Migdal-el means “Tower of God” or “God’s Tower,” and Beth-shemesh means “House of the Sun.” Iron is believed to be near the modern border between Israel and Lebanon, and it appears again in Joshua 19:45. The exact locations of Horem and Migdal-el are uncertain, but the text preserves them as real places within Naphtali’s inheritance. Beth-anath is also mentioned in Joshua 21:32, associated with Naphtali. Even where archaeology is silent, the record stands as a faithful witness to Israel’s settlement.
Biblical connections
The careful listing of cities and villages shows that God’s promise to Israel was concrete and detailed. Each tribe received a defined inheritance, and the total of nineteen cities is stated explicitly. This record demonstrates God’s faithfulness in fulfilling His covenant promises, giving His people a tangible place to dwell. The distribution itself was commanded by God through Moses, so the land was not a human achievement but a divine gift.
Application
God’s provision is specific and trustworthy. Just as He gave Naphtali a particular land with named cities, He knows the details of our lives and provides for our needs. The recording of even obscure places reminds us that nothing in God’s plan is forgotten. His care extends to the small and overlooked parts of our daily experience.
Reflection
Consider how God has given you a place and a purpose. The inheritance of Naphtali was not vague but measured and recorded. In the same way, God’s care for you is personal and precise. Trust that He who assigned cities to tribes also orders your steps.
