Joshua 19:39
This is the inheritance of the tribe of the children of Naphtali according to their families, the cities and their villages.
Joshua 19:39 (KJV)
Context
The book of Joshua records how God gave the Promised Land to the twelve tribes of Israel. In Joshua 19, the land is being divided, and this verse is the closing summary for the tribe of Naphtali. The full description of Naphtali’s territory is found in Joshua 19:32-39, and this verse ends that section with a clear statement of what the tribe received.
Naphtali was one of the twelve tribes, descended from Jacob’s son Naphtali. Their portion lay in the northern region of Canaan, near the Sea of Galilee. This was fertile land, and it became an important area in later biblical history. The allotment to Naphtali was part of the larger division of the Promised Land, which fulfilled God’s promise to Abraham’s descendants.
Meaning
The verse says the inheritance was given “according to their families.” This means each family group within the tribe received its own share. The land was not given only to the tribe as a whole, but to every household. This shows God’s care for each family unit, not just for the nation at large.
The phrase “the cities and their villages” shows that the inheritance included both towns and the surrounding rural settlements. This was a complete provision. The people received places to live, work, and gather together. Nothing essential was missing from what God gave them.
The word “inheritance” is important. This was not land they earned or captured by their own strength. It was a gift from God, promised long before to Abraham and his descendants. The careful listing of boundaries and cities shows that God keeps His promises with precision and order. This verse is a summary statement, confirming that the distribution was organized and complete.
Biblical connections
The earthly inheritance given to Naphtali points to a greater spiritual inheritance. In the New Testament, believers are described as heirs of God through Christ. The land was a tangible sign of God’s faithfulness, but the full inheritance includes salvation, the Holy Spirit, and eternal life. This connection helps us see that the Old Testament land distribution was not only about property, but about God’s larger plan of redemption. The theme of inheritance runs throughout Scripture, from the promise to Abraham to the eternal hope we have in Christ.
Application
God is faithful to fulfil His promises. Just as He gave Naphtali exactly what He had promised, we can trust Him to keep His word in our lives. When circumstances seem uncertain, we can remember that God does not forget what He has said.
We are stewards of what God gives us. The tribes were responsible to care for their land and use it in a way that honoured God. In the same way, we are entrusted with time, talents, relationships, and resources. We should use them wisely and for His purposes.
Family matters to God. The inheritance was distributed according to families, showing that God’s blessings extend to the whole household. We have the opportunity to leave a legacy of faith for our children and grandchildren. Our faithfulness today can influence future generations.
Community is part of God’s design. The cities and villages provided places for people to live together, support one another, and build a shared life. We should value our local communities and invest in healthy relationships, encouraging one another in faith.
Reflection
This verse reminds us that God is a God of order and detail. He did not give vague promises, but specific land to specific families. His care extends to the smallest parts of our lives. We can rest in the knowledge that our ultimate inheritance is secure in Christ, and that God will complete what He has begun in us.
