Joshua 2:23

So the two men returned, and descended from the mountain, and passed over, and came to Joshua the son of Nun, and told him all things that befell them:

Joshua 2:23 (KJV)

This verse closes the account of the two spies whom Joshua sent into Jericho. After Moses died, Joshua led Israel toward the Promised Land. The spies entered the city, were hidden by Rahab, and escaped into the hill country. They waited three days there before returning to Joshua. Their safe arrival completes a dangerous mission and moves the story from preparation to action.

The verse reports four actions: the men returned, descended from the mountain, crossed over the Jordan, and came to Joshua. Each step shows careful movement back to the camp. Then they told him all that had happened. Their report was complete and honest. The word “all” shows that they held nothing back. This faithful reporting gave Joshua the information he needed to lead Israel forward. The journey back was not casual; it required patience and trust. They had hidden for three days, knowing that pursuers might still be near. Yet God protected them and brought them safely to their leader.

The spies’ return echoes the earlier account in Numbers 13, where twelve spies gave a fearful report about Canaan. Here, the two spies bring a report of faith. Their words prepare the people to trust God’s promise. The crossing of the Jordan also points ahead to the nation’s crossing in Joshua 3, when God would part the river. This journey back is a small sign of the greater deliverance to come. In the next verse, the spies declare that the LORD has given the land into their hands and that the inhabitants’ hearts melt with fear. Their report directly supports Joshua’s leadership and prepares the people for the conquest of Jericho. The return from the mountain to the camp marks a transition from reconnaissance to the next stage of God’s plan.

Obedience and faith belong together. The spies obeyed Joshua’s command and trusted God to protect them. Their example teaches us to follow God’s leading even when the task seems risky. We can also learn from their honest report. Sharing what God has done encourages others and helps leaders make wise decisions. When we complete our duties faithfully, we take part in God’s larger plan. The spies did not keep their experience to themselves; they told Joshua everything. In the same way, we can speak openly about God’s work in our lives. Faithful service often happens in small, unseen steps, but God uses those steps to advance His purposes.

God’s providence is seen in the spies’ safe return. He guarded them through danger and brought them back to Joshua. Their success was not luck; it was the fruit of obedience and divine care. This verse reminds us that God works through faithful servants. He confirms His guidance by helping His people finish what He assigns. We can trust Him to lead us through our own journeys, knowing that He is with us and that His purposes will stand. The spies’ safe arrival was not the end of the story; it was the beginning of a new phase. Their report gave the people confidence in God’s deliverance. As we look at our own lives, we can remember that God is faithful to complete what He starts. He who called us will also guide us, protect us, and bring us to the place He has prepared.
