Joshua 2:24

And they said unto Joshua, Truly the Lord hath delivered into our hands all the land; for even all the inhabitants of the country do faint because of us.

Joshua 2:24 (KJV)

Joshua 2:24 closes the account of the two spies whom Joshua sent from Shittim to inspect Jericho before Israel crossed the Jordan (Joshua 2:1). Rahab hid the men and helped them escape. When they returned, they gave Joshua a report that shaped the nation’s next step. Their mission was to gather intelligence about the land and its defenses, and this verse is the climax of that mission.

The spies declared, “Truly the LORD hath delivered into our hands all the land; for even all the inhabitants of the country do faint because of us.” The Hebrew word for “faint” means “to melt.” It describes more than tiredness; it pictures courage dissolving completely. The people of Jericho had lost all will to resist. The spies spoke of God’s deliverance as already accomplished, using the past tense “hath delivered,” even though the battle had not yet begun. This was not mere optimism; it was a testimony to God’s faithfulness, confirming His promise to give Israel the land.

Their words echo Rahab’s confession in Joshua 2:9-11, where she said that the inhabitants’ hearts melted and that the LORD is God in heaven above and in earth beneath. The Canaanites feared not Israel’s army but Israel’s God, whose mighty acts at the Red Sea and against the Amorite kings had gone before them. The spies’ report confirmed God’s promise to give Israel the land, and it strengthened Joshua’s confidence as he prepared to lead the people across the Jordan. The fear of the Canaanites was not primarily of Israel’s military might, but of Israel’s God, whose reputation had gone before them.

  • Trust in God’s faithfulness: The spies trusted God’s promise before they saw victory. Believers today can rely on God’s word even when circumstances look difficult.

  • Recognize the power of God’s presence: When God goes before His people, opposition loses heart. His presence brings peace and victory in our battles.

  • Be a faithful witness: The spies brought back an encouraging report that built faith in the whole community. Our words can strengthen others when we speak of God’s faithfulness.

God works through human effort, such as the spies’ reconnaissance, to confirm His promises. He does not need our help, but He often uses faithful servants to carry out His plans. The report of Joshua 2:24 reminds us that God’s deliverance is certain, and that we can face our own challenges with boldness, knowing that the LORD has already gone before us. The spies’ declaration is a model of faith: it speaks of God’s deliverance as an accomplished fact even before the battle was fought. Reports of opposition should be weighed against the certainty of God’s power.
